Maybe this has been answered elsewhere, but could someone please tell me why the more recent Star Wars authors call C-3PO "C-3PO" and the olds ones called him "Threepio" (ditto for Artoo/R2-D2)?

I can't say that I'd noticed an overwhelming difference. Personal preference, I'd assume.

Me too, Empress. I can't recall seeing "C-3PO" much at all. It's mostly Threepio (and Artoo). I have no idea why they do that, but they do a similar thing with almost all droids that are mentioned in the EU. For example:
Em Teedee = M-TD (Lowbacca's translator droid)
Leebo = LE-BO2D9 (Dash Rendar's droid)

I think it's a difference between familiar and formal naming...

Quite possibly SeusGeus, though I haven't noticed it much at all, they may merely be using the formal naming as the droids do not seem to have played much of a part at all in the LOTF books. Not as extensively as they have in others.

I think Mezhan Kwaad hit it on the head, it is more of a formal versus informal reference. I always remember Luke referring to C3PO as Threepio, and then others started doing it.
Very observant though.

Well, I first noticed it when reading "Vector Prime". Before then, everyone called the droids "Threepio" and "Artoo". And I wondered if there was a particular reason why.
These are great answers.
