Do comic help or hurt the star wars story

Bam

I like they add to some filler stories, but more often then not I think they hurt the story of Star Wars.

They drift further from the Movie based standards and take it in way too much of a comic direction

Thoughts? I'm sure some of you "graphic novel" guys will start the flaming so have at it..

I know there are some hard core comic fans, but my opinion is that they don't really hurt them, but I don't think they help either. A lot of the books refer to stuff that happens in the comics, and since I don't read them, sometimes I am lost.

In some real sick way they all fit together like a big puzzle you need all the pieces to complete is but some just don't look right at first. The art is realy what sets them appart from the movie the story just hold the two together. The comic is a little short on story and big ob graphic art but thats OK I think.Just a different way to love Star Wars. :}SLK

NA

I couldn't have said it any better, SLK!

In some ways comics are more appropriate for the Star Wars story because it is such a "visual" story.

Some of the best SW stories out there right now are comics: Legacy and Knights of the Old Republic.

I would also argue that comics were responsible for a sort of resurrection of interest in Star Wars when Dark Empire came out...that along with the Thrawn Trilogy of course.

I just want a good story, regardless of medium. Comics have some really good stories right now.

I can't say the same thing for the animated Clone Wars movie.

I think some of them are pretty dumb though. Some of them are like pieces of the puzzle that are supposed to go one place, but don't fit there. Example: Prelude to Rebellion.

Master Stymie you have a good point the comics are so much more graphic and visual then say cartoons there just lack in story content a bite. The comics are worth a look if you haven't already . :}SLK Legacy and Knights of the Old Republic is my favorite.

I want them to make a movie about KOTOR and/or Legacy. Legacy would be awesome with all of the sith in it. I understand comics can get a little cheesy here and there but did anyone notice the battle of Endor in Episode VI??? Or how about everyones favorite !@#$-gungan Jar Jar Binks? I think the the movies and the comics have stuff that is great and stuff that should have never been done.

It's just the perils of story telling I guess.

I never read many of the comics except for Crimson Empire and the Rogue Squadron series, which I thought were two of the few titles that stood out, IMO. Would like to have read the KOTOR series if I could find the time. Nevertheless, I don't find the comics to be damaging to the SW franchise at all, since they add more fuel to the fire and sate the fanboys' appetite for more stories and content (In the same way that certain sci-fi TV series has aired its shows for the past 30+ years).

I absolutely disagree that comic books lack in story content. I think this is an unfortunate stereotype about the comic book medium. The medium is as valid as any other story medium.

Poor content can be found in any medium. I would argue that movies are very guilty of this. Two hours to build a character and tell a story can result in very bad and haphazard storytelling.

Good comics can take more time to develop characters since the characters and story continually develops every month , as is the case with Legacy and KoTOR. An example of very poor content is the TFU graphic novel.

In any case, I don't see how comics hurt the Star Wars story. If anything, it keeps the story alive and fresh and brings in new readers.

I disagree about Legacy. I think its very unorginal, trying to copy as much as they can from the movies and trying to boost it up with the come-back of old character from either previous series or the movies themselves such as the come-back of Artoo. And the several characters you see during his hallucinations. With Cade Skywalker they are trying to create another Anakin Skywalker. One who holds great power but turns to the Dark Side. It keeps bothering me that almost everybody in the Skywalker family turns to the Dark Side.

I think it's pretty brilliant--and that there are pretty large distinctions between Anakin and Cade. But no big. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

What is your take, KT, on the topic of the thread: do comics ultimately help or hurt?

I think in thier own way, the comics/Graphic novels help further along, fill in some little gaps and can even expand on a story. But on the other side, if not done well.. it can hurt the continuity...but that is with the novels too. I have enjoyed the majority of the graphic novels and think they have been helpful :)

I know Cade and Anakin are suppose to be different, but they're based on the same basis, which I thought was unoriginal.

Say what you will of the Cade/Anakin similarities (although I disagree), the stories in Legacy are very different from the prequel story.

Lots of new story-territory explored, IMO.

Comic books are part of the oldest human storytelling tradition -like cave paintings, they are pictures that tell a story.

Star Wars has a huge variety of comics- short stories like the Star Wars Tales volumes, alternative Star Wars histories - the Infinities series and of course new and canon characters in different situations. Who doesn't want to see their heroes (and villains) in new stories?

Legacy and KOTOR are my current faves and they are worth a read by anyone.Dark Times also explores the galaxy just after the Empire became established.

Well said.

And Dark Times was a good comic. I hope they bring it back.

Cade Skywalker is nothing more than a combination of Quinlan Vos and Anakin Skywalker, being a Skywalker with a heavy responsibility, walks the dark path as Quinlan. Scruffy looking as Quinlan. Even in looks they are very similar. No surprise cause it's the same artist and same writer. Other characters were also based on characters from previous series. The story at first is also based on stories from Palpatine to the Yuuzhang Vong. Also the cheap trick to make it interesting is again bring more characters in it from previous series. Hell why not R2-D2, whose sole purpose was to make it seem more similar to the star wars we know. To make it more interesting. And when I found out the true identity of of Darth Krayt I was really disappointed, cause I actually liked the character as a Jedi. Couldn't they have invented someone new or someone more likely to turn to the Dark Side? The story is not unique at all, it's just elements from other series and books wrapped up together to make it seem like a new story.

I under stand what you are saying Kalin. I agree and disagree. I think the writers just want to incorporate things from the past, like R2 etc. into the future just like George did with the movies. I mean R2 has barely even been in Legacy anyway, plus it's a good idea being that a droid could outlive everyone else and people pass down things through the family all of thime in reality. PLUS R2 always ties things together. The entire original story was built around the droids perspective.

The true identity of Darth Krayt annoyed me too. I think he should have been left mysterious like Vader was for all those years at first. Makes a better villian I think.

As for Cade, I think he's great. He's Anakin, Luke (not so much) and Han Solo rolled into one. Plus he's a recovering junkie, what's not to love. I like his ghetto crew too.

I do agree that Star Wars writers of novels and comics tend to copy things to much. It would be nice to see an ALL NEW take on Star Wars, so I'll give you that. I mean, if they bust out another super weapon I'm gonna get p i s s e d. But overall I enjoy reading Legacy, KOTOR and Dark Times. Nothing is ever perfect.
