I know I posted something simmilar to this in the "Kenner Story" thread, but I thought this might be kind of a fun thing to think about.
Why didn't Kenner ever fix the color of the Luke Skywalker lightsabers for A New Hope and Empire?

Why didn't Kenner ever change the "built in" lightsaber style for the three figures that have them.
They gave Luke Bespin and Luke jedi sabers they could HOLD. Why didn't Kenner ever re-tool the arms of the first three figures and give them sabers THEY could hold?

Why didnt Kenner ever make a Rebel Fleet Security figure?
I mean man its really no different then the Death Star Commander.

Yeah man! These are the questions I was talking about! keep 'em comming!

I know why the Return of the Jedi figure came with a blue lightsaber. It was going to be blue right up until the release date, but Lucas felt that it didn't stand out against the blue sky of the Tatooine Skiff battle so changed it to green at the last minute, by which time the figures had all been made.

Thanks, J1m! I had no idea. Wish we had an answer for why Kenner never changed the color on the other two figures though!

Why in the hell did they ever make the Mini Rigs?? I own just about all of them and I think they are the most useless waste of plastic kenner could have ever thought up.

Why didn't they sit back and actually LOOK at the Greedo and Walrus Man figures before they released them?

Mar 21, 2009 8:10 PM | Report Abuse reply
If you look on the ROTJ DVD extras it has an early trailer with Luke with the bluelightsaber. As for Greedo and Walrus Man - technology was limited - but also there wasn't this need by fans to have movie accurate figures. These were the first figures ever to be in the 3 3/4 inch range.

I mean - nobody (toy wise) thought making figures that small was a viable option. All other action figures were 12". Also the Star Wars figures were released a year or so after the film - so perhaps accuracy wasn't a concern?

These are amongst some of the reasons I don't collect vintage....
If sentimentality is important then cool, based on quality they are inferior in my opinion.
Overall, modern offers accurate sculpting and better articulation as well as characters that Kenner never made.

Dispite how these may seem like complaints, they really are genuine questions. I see your point about the modern stuff, NR. A lot of it looks really good. Maybe it is some of the sentimental value, but I really do enjoy the vintage line!

The positive with the vintage line - they only released a handful of figures for each film - so collecting them was achievable and a good potential for all kids over the years they were released. The new lins have so many waves released so close to another at an increasing price per figure.

Why didnt they ever sell a Replacement Weapons pack like the Hoth Survival Pack??
-- Why didnt they ever release a Pre Production/Prototype (Artist/Designer) Renditions of the figures?? Would have sold a MILLION to collectors. You know a before and after kinda deal, not necessarily expanded universe stuff.
- Why didn they make a luke pilot helmet w/ blaster shield down, for luke farm boy? So we could make him practice like Obi Won did on the falcon??
- Why didnt they make admiral grand Moff tarkin?? They made it a point to refer to him as a "Main Character" on all of the posters and on the Movie Credits??

Sypho - I think that this is a little harsh. Did you collect the figures in the 80s? The technology available to produce the figures along with a very different view on these figures - them being TOYS not collector's items meant that there clearly wasnt the demand for the things you say. The range was much more limited to the ones available now.
I must admit that I think most of the figures produced now are for collectors - and the fact that every minor character, however brief their appearance, does smacks of a profit orientated move.
I do agree that replacement weapons would have been good.

Actually I collected them in the 70s (Clearing my throat) Ha!
I beg to differ on them being produced just as simply toys. The rage involved with procurement of all things Star Wars 77-79 was so intense and just plain ole CRAZY thats why LFL gave out so many licenses they later came to regret.
People went nuts over the Movies. Adults were in those Isles collecting and buying up Star Wars figures just as fast as the Kiddies, I was there to see it for myself.
I think that now more then ever so the Toy Companies have finally listed to what the collectors want, which is a FAR cry from the 70s and 80s when we just basically had to take what they gave us.
And if George would have been in it (Star Wars) just for the Money, there would have been healthier (i.e. he almost died from a stroke, before the end of its production) ways for him to have earned it, not to mention 20th Century Fox almost pull the ($$$) out from under him on more then one occasion due to being behind schedule and in cost over runs. It was a miracle that the movie even made it to the screen.
The story of the toys was just as equally interesting, since Fox basically thought of the toy line as just an insignificant side line, not worth anything. The exclusive rights that George Lucas requested for the Licensing was nothing short of genious in my opinion.

Thank you - I was there too
As I was saying - I don't feel that collectors would have been ready for concept figures etc - and the molding for a blast helmet wasn't there yet

Sell the rights to Hasbro to continue to use their name and logo on even the Modern Figures and such??
Kenner is a name Synonymous with Star Wars toys and Star Wars collecting.
Why didnt Kenner make a more Permanent, Display Case for Star Wars figures, ok maybe not museum quality but a nice display with a Star Wars or Kenner Logo on it??
