Beliefs
Counter to millennia of Jedi teachings, the followers of Potentium claimed that there was no inherent evil in viewing the Force. They claimed that what others called the light side was actually just the Force itself, which is inherently good. This was backed up by the fact that Ashla, the ancient name of the Force, came later to describe the light side. What others therefore called the dark side was a perversion of the Force, twisted by those who used it. Believers of Potentium said that the potential for light and dark sides resided in the user, not the Force itself. They also thought that the Jedi Masters refused to believe in the Potentium view because it would mean the Jedi weren't needed to fight evil, for evil would not exist. And since there was no dark side, there were no dark side actions or Force techniques; in effect any action, good or evil, could be performed without risk as long as the intent wasn't evil. Some Jedi have theorized that the Potentium may have originated as a Sith scheme to subvert Jedi teachings.
About a century before the Battle of Naboo, the followers of Potentium were expelled from the Jedi Order, parallel to the Jedi Order's treatment of Gray Jedi as "misguided." Yoda and the rest of the Jedi Council didn't consider them Dark Jedi, but they said it was the duty of the Jedi to use the Force to protect others, not study its absolute limits. The Council said that testing the Force to its limits would lead to the dark side.
It should be noted that some followers of the Potentium still attempted to avoid the dark side--however they saw the dark side as something within themselves to be avoided, not something in the Force. They reason that if the Force is the energy that flows through all life, the dark side simply came from the corruption of humanity. They felt that if they could be perfectly moral, they could be immune to the dark side and therefore use any technique they wanted.
[edit] Followers
The basic precepts of the Potentium may have been influenced by the morally relativistic and solipsistic philosophy espoused by Jedi Master Phanius around 2,000 BBY.
The Potentium was theorized in 132 BBY. At the time the Potentium were expelled from the Jedi, Leor Hal was their leader. Prior to their expulsion, Hal had recruited many students from prospective Jedi among the aristrocratic families of Coruscant and Alderaan.
Sekot, the intelligence of Zonama Sekot, accepted Potentium after its awakening, when it was colonized by some of the outcast followers under Hal. The colonists felt Zonama Sekot was proof of the Potentium philosophy, and Sekot eventually came to consider itself the protector of the Force (though as some derisively pointed out, this protectorship was self-appointed). Vergere, an Old Republic Jedi who was captured by the Yuuzhan Vong, is believed to have taken this as one of the contributing factors in her teachings, although contradicting the Potentiate's main edicts of evil being nonexistent.
Following the expulsion of Hal, Qui-Gon Jinn and Mace Windu had a run-in with a group of Potentium apprentices.[1]
Although many believe that Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order practiced this belief after the Yuuzhan Vong War through Jacen Solo's insistence, it was actually closer to the philosophy of Gray Jedi as stated by the Grand Master himself after the Liberation of Coruscant. Near the end of the Swarm War, the New Jedi Order resumed the more orthodox light side and dark side approach. In 40 ABY, future Sith Lord Jacen Solo still followed the Potentium along with his informal apprentice Ben Skywalker.

GRAY JEDI
Three variations of the Grey Jedi code
"There is no Dark Side, nor a light side, there is only the Force. I will do what I must to keep the balance as the balance is what keeps me together. There is no good without evil, but evil must not be allowed to flourish. There is passion, yet peace; Serenity, yet emotion; Chaos, yet order. I am the wielder of the flame, the protector of balance. I am the holder of the Torch, lighting the way. I am the keeper of the flame, soldier of balance. I am a Guardian of the Balance. I am a Gray Jedi."
?Leor Danal reciting The Gray Jedi Code for the first time while in a force trance : Jedi Master Lillian Rand
Through pain comes wisdom;
but not without ignorance comes knowledge.
There is no power; only the force.
There are no sides; only the whole. No darkness, No Light, only understanding: Jedi Master Rav'el samaad
There are emotions, yet we have Serenity.
There is Chaos, yet Harmony is produced.
There are passions, yet there can be Balance.
There's often hurry, still we cultivate patience.
There's much ignorance: this knowledge is wisdom.
There will be Death. But there is the Force
This is the ancient code of the grey: jedi master John Sislou
WARRIOR AND SAGE CLASSES
The Fire Warrior- They believed that the best approach to combat is a mixture of raw power and inner fire. Inner fire is the emotions of anger, calmness, and passion. They shrived for a balance of all three of these and used them to their advantage. They often used their inner fire to overpower their opponent with their strength and often opponents would back down out of sheer fear. A fire warrior takes the most angering moment of his life and focuses on it, making his passion and hatred grow. He also uses the most loving moment of his life, and most tranquil moment of his life to keep this hatred in check. Thus giving him the physical prowess without being susceptible to his emotions controlling him and disrupting the balance. They also were skilled in a ancient sith technique where they could gain strength from force sensitives, similar to Force Drain. The form of lightsaber that they used was similar to Vaapaad.
The Water Warrior- They believed that the warrior must be flexible as water and just as unyielding. They drew not on inner fire, but on inner calmness. They believed a mind like the moon or water in a state of pure awareness was best. They could block their opponents with great skill because they could see the attack before it happened. Often they wouldn't even bother fighting, choosing instead to let their opponent tire themselves out while always evading them. They used the force to heighten their awareness and to empower them. They mastered the art of Force Sight, Force Perception, and Force Seeing. They also had techniques to blind their opponents, to use their lack of awareness against them.
The Wind Sages- Focused on being the perfect balance of intellect and power. They favored unarmed combat and mastery of the force.
They are considered the most mystical out of all the classes and hardest to become. They believed that weapons dulled the senses and weakened the body. They use the Force for 100% of their offense and defense and instead of using lightsabers their fighting style is a unique mixture between force powers and martial arts which they called Mahu'Kate. They are able to cause "storms" in the Force This storm can do anything from ripping a fleet of ships to shreds to transporting a ship thousands of light-years across the galaxy. They are also one of the only two sects to have the deadly knowledge of the Thought Bomb. When done correctly, this requires the sacrifice of the user to empower it. It then targets all force sensitive enemies and wipes them out completely, destroying clothes, bodies, bones, cities, ships, anything in its path. When done incorrectly however, every single thing in its path will die, not just the user's enemies.
They studied ancient sith holocrons and held many secrets of the force, including how to banish another into a different plane of existence.
The Ice Sages- Focused entirely on the Force. Discovering the mysteries of the galaxy and constantly seeking to bring all forces into balance. They valued intelligence and calmness above all else. They used combat only when needed and often in war would provide battle meditation and other defensive force abilities to their comrades.
Although these classes specialize in specific areas and Force powers, these are not limited to such... Anyone of any class can have knowledge from a sith holocron or focus on a certain technique. The abilities listed in the classes refers to the powers that are very useful to that class and perhaps comes more naturally to them.

GRAY JEDI HISTORY
"Jinn always does things his own way, always sure he is right, always incredulous if we do not see it his way. Some think he is a gray Jedi."
?Tyvokka on Qui-Gon Jinn
Gray Jedi was a term, sometimes used pejoratively, that described Jedi who were thought to operate independently and often outside the strictures of the High Council.
The term itself seems to date back as far as the Old Sith Wars. Certainly, during this time period, Gray Jedi themselves seem to have become associated even with a certain variety of robe. In the following millennia, the term continued to increase in usage, most likely due to the increasing trend towards centralization of power in the Order, and the increased prominence of the Jedi Council itself.
Relationship with the Council
"If you would just follow the code, you would be on the Council. They will not go along with you this time."
"You still have much to learn, my young apprentice."
?Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn
Most Gray Jedi had a tense relationship with the Council; while, for most intents and purposes, they were loyal members of the Jedi Order, their maverick natures often put them into conflict with it, especially against more conservative members of the Council.
It is perhaps this friction, combined with their unorthodox behavior that made it rare for a Gray Jedi to join the Council themselves or ascend to any position of real leadership in the order. After all, the High Council chose its own members, and most of the time their preference was for orthodox Jedi, such as the group described as the Old Guard. Qui-Gon Jinn's candidacy was rejected in favor of Plo Koon, and then Ki-Adi-Mundi, both of whom were more in line with the Council's way of thinking.
Traits
Although the term gray is often thought to refer to Force users believed to skirt the line between the light side and dark side, Gray Jedi were not exclusively followers of such a creed.
Indeed Qui-Gon Jinn himself, one of the most famous of the so-named Gray Jedi, was a staunch adherent of the Living Force, and as much aware of the dark side's lure as any of his peers. He may have been unorthodox, both in his behavior and relationship with the Council, but there was never any doubt of Jinn's adherence to the core of the Jedi philosophy. Gray Jedi were also known to have worn their own robes, as if it was an official faction.

The Weakness of Inferiors
The Weakness of Inferiors was the second volume of Emperor Palpatine's Dark Side Compendium. The Weakness of Inferiors talked about the secrets of control?without violence?over the innocent, the ignorant, and "all inferiors". It discussed ways to properly control and persuade the weak using the Force. Palpatine advocated a mix of fear and awe.
Palpatine was most proud about this arrogant teaching. All the content in The Weakness of Inferiors was developed by Palpatine himself, out of his own experience. Palpatine revealed this volume to Luke Skywalker without hesitation, convinced that young Skywalker was forever lost in the dark side of the Force.
This volume covered mainly four aspects:
All power comes from outside the weak.
The face of authority.
The law of fear.
The weak do not understand the Force.

The Creation of Monsters was the third volume of Emperor Palpatine's Dark Side Compendium. It covered the subject of properly mastering and harnessing the technique of Sith Alchemy.
Unlike the first two, the Creation of Monsters was unfinished at the time of Palpatine's first death at the Battle of Endor, being left in a nearly-complete M@#$%CRIPT form

Control
"Control is internal. It is the Jedi's ability to recognize the Force in himself and to use it to his benefit."
―Jedi Master Bodo Baas[src]
"Control, Control, you must learn Control."
―Jedi Master Yoda[src]
Powers that required Control of the Force modified the user's physical state as the user dictated. Most Control powers were defensive, but not all.
The Jedi Order's teaching method began with the aspect of Control, but its powers were rarely taught to Younglings. They meditated to achieve greater understanding of the Force in themselves and later, as Padawans, learned real Control powers from their masters.

[edit] Sense
"...Sense involves the next step, in which the Jedi recognizes the force in the universe outside herself."
―Jedi Master Bodo Baas[src]
Powers that involved Sense of the Force required deeper feeling and understanding of the Force to acquire information about the world around the Force-user. The information could be physical, emotional, Force-like, or other.
Jedi Younglings began learning Sense powers early in their training, near the time of Lightsaber combat training.

"Alter is the third and most difficult area to master, for it involves the student's ability to modify the Force and redistribute its energies."
―Jedi Master Bodo Baas[src]
Powers that require a user to Alter the Force granted a limited influence to the universe to make changes in it. A Force-sensitive could modify its surroundings in a most spectacular way, seemingly by will.
Jedi Younglings usually were not taught this aspect, as they could accidentally harm each other with their powers.

[edit] Light
"A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack."
―Yoda[src]
Light side powers were the Force powers that the user accessed through the Force's light side. The Jedi used them for protection, increasing physical and mental capacities, and for defense. They could also inspire and increase the resolve of allies. Certain light side powers could also be used offensively, but did not directly cause physical harm.

Dark side powers were used to harm, debilitate, or kill. Some, like Rage and Drain, were used to benefit the user personally, akin to powers of the light side, with the difference that these were used at the expense of his or her own health or another individual's Force reserve. The dark side drew its power from emotion, and while the intent behind their use may well have been good at the time, it was most likely to lead one to further spiritual corruption from overuse, without the proper self control and mindset. Continuous use of dark powers was shown to have a physically corrupting effect on the Force-user, regardless of intent, due to the body's inability to handle such power for long periods of time.

The Sith Order was a sect of dark side Force users bent on destroying the Jedi. They were characterized by their single-minded lust for power and the brutal methods they were willing to use in order to acquire it. The sect existed in many diverse forms throughout galactic history. Originally, the Sith were a humanoid species that interbred with a group of exiled Dark Jedi, but after the rise and fall of that people, the meaning of the word 'Sith' changed. In time, the Sith would not be identified by their race, but by their dedication to the ancient Sith philosophy. There were many factions of the Sith, the most notable being the Sith Empire and the Order of the Sith Lords.

Philosophy and Customs
Main articles: The Force: Sith Philosophy and Dark side of the Force
"The Sith and the Jedi are similar in almost every way, including their quest for greater power. The only difference between the two is that the Sith are not afraid of the dark side of the Force. That is why they are more powerful."
"The Sith rely on their passion for their strength. They think inwards only about themselves."
"And the Jedi don't?"
―Palpatine and Anakin Skywalker[src]
Forged by fire
"Without strife, your victory has no meaning. Without strife, you do not advance. Without strife, there is only stagnation."
―Yuthura Ban[src]
"It is natural for him to want to destroy me. It is not crude mundane ambition, as it would be in an ordinary man; it is part of his growth. And of course it does not offend me—it is why I chose him. But he needs to grow still further."
―Emperor Palpatine, on his apprentice, Darth Vader[src]
Sith philosophy emphasized conflict. The Sith believed that it empowered both individuals and civilizations by forcing them to change, grow, and evolve. Conflict ensured that only the strong would survive, thus leading the Sith down the path to perfection. Sentients only deserved what they were strong enough to take and those too weak to protect themselves were fair game.
The pacifistic teachings of the Jedi were viewed as obstructions to progress; lack of conflict led only to stagnation and decline. Likewise, morality was treated as an obstacle to be overcome as it got in the way of a Sith's ability to recognize and seize opportunities for advancement and self-empowerment.
Empowered by passion
"What fuels your power with the Force but your passion? The stronger, darker emotions. Anger, hatred, fear… these passions empower us."
―Yuthura Ban[src]
The core of a Sith's power came from emotion. The Jedi taught that fear and anger were negative emotions that must be overcome, but the Sith understood that every living creature was subject to such passions. They believed in harnessing rather than suppressing these natural urges. The Sith did not endeavor to place themselves beyond passions as the Jedi did—on the contrary, they believed that emotion was required in order to attain a holistic understanding of the Force.
However, not all emotions were embraced by the Sith. They, like the Jedi, considered 'love' a dangerous emotion, but for different reasons. The Jedi discouraged love because it led to attachment, but the Sith taught that love led to mercy, which was anathema to them.
"Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me."
―The Code of the Sith[src]
"May the Force serve you well."
―Sith Phrase
Sith tattoos
Many Sith Lords adorn themselves with unique tattoos, as a symbol of their devotion to the order. The tattoos often have an alternating pattern of red and black based mostly off of Ancient Sith Holocrons. Sith tattoos are incredibly painful to have applied, as they often cover the entire body. Examples of tattooed Sith Lords include the infamous Darth Maul, as well as Darth Talon, Darth Wyyrlok, Darth Ruyn, and many other members of Darth Krayt's new Sith Order.
Lightsabers
"The Sith grew past the use of lightsabers, but we continue to use them, if only to humiliate the Jedi."
―Darth Sidious, to Darth Vader[src]
Many Sith and Dark Jedi used synthetic, reengineered lightsaber crystals, also known as synth crystals, to focus the blades of their lightsabers. These crystals were red, giving the blade a red hue. Synth crystals were more powerful but were unstable, causing lightsabers to short out or die after a much shorter time than normal lightsaber crystals.
History
Main article: History of the Sith
"But in their hearts they never forgot the Jedi. The hatred for the Jedi Order burns in their veins like fire, and it echoes in their teachings."
―Darth Traya[src]

"There is a faction of meatbags called the Sith. They want what any rational meatbag would want—the power to assassinate anyone they choose at any time."
―HK-47[src]
The term Sith referred to numerous disparate dark side organizations that rose and fell over thousands of years of galactic history. No single entity long survived the vigilance of the Jedi Knights, but even in defeat the ancient Sith teachings proved difficult to suppress. Each time the Jedi Order grew complacent, a Sith cult, brotherhood, order, or empire would arise from the ashes to threaten the galaxy once more. New iterations of the Sith would be linked only tenuously to past traditions through a shared ideology.
Sith (species)
The Sith were a species of red-skinned humanoids native to Ziost and Korriban that were enslaved by exiled Dark Jedi. Prior to their discovery, the Sith were divided into a meek and lowly slave class, a skilled and intelligent engineer class, and the warlike Massassi class. Over time, the Sith interbred with the Human Dark Jedi through the practice of Sith Alchemy, and the two peoples became one.
Massassi
The Massassi were related to the Sith species. Under the rule of the exiled Dark Jedi, many Massassi captives were subject to Sith Alchemy, which resulted in them being more deadly and easier for their Sith masters to control. They were distinguished by bone spurs which erupted from their skin and by their abnormally giant size. They would serve as soldiers for the Sith Empire.

The Sith Empire was a rich and powerful empire that was established by Dark Jedi banished from the Galactic Republic after their defeat at the Battle of Corbos during the Hundred-Year Darkness. After developing in complete isolation for thousands of years, the Sith eventually rediscovered the Republic. The Dark Lord of the Sith Naga Sadow led the Empire in an invasion during the Great Hyperspace War, but he was defeated. The Sith Empire was believed to have been utterly destroyed by Republic forces in the aftermath of the Second Battle of Korriban. However, one Dark Lord to escaped in the Unknown Regions with a group of dark-siders known as the True Sith and rebuilt the Empire. Using the dark secrets he managed to survive for many centuries and eventually attacked the Republic. After a Great War that lasted for many decades, the Sith and the Republic signed a treaty and from that moment existed as two separate governments.
True Sith
The "True Sith" was an obscure and largely unknown order of adherents to the dark side of the Force, who survived the Great Hyperspace War and the eventual collapse of the Sith Empire. Darth Traya told the Jedi Exile that the order had been in existence for tens of thousands of years and were silently waiting in the Unknown Regions during the time of the Jedi Civil War.
According to Darth Traya, the "True Sith" had existed for millennia prior to the rise of the ancient Sith Empire. She and Revan believed that it was they who had goaded the Mandalorians into attacking the Galactic Republic, starting the Mandalorian Wars. Kreia stated that both Malachor V and the graveyard planet, Korriban, had once been planets at the edges of that mysterious Empire, and that while these "True Sith" had forgotten those ancient worlds of the dark side, they would remember. And they did remember. Under the leadership of their Sith Emperor, they restored the Sith Empire and invaded the Republic.
Brotherhood of the Sith
The Brotherhood of the Sith was a group of Dark Jedi founded by Exar Kun who broke away from the Jedi Order to study Sith techniques. During the Great Sith War, the Brotherhood attempted to conquer the Republic with the aid of the Krath and the Mandalorian Crusaders. The Brotherhood was defeated and virtually exterminated during the Battle of Yavin IV.
Krath
The Krath was a Sith secret society founded by Aleema and Satal Keto, the bored heirs to the Empress Teta system. Following a Krath attack on a Jedi conclave, Ulic Qel-Droma attempted to infiltrate the group, but he failed. He was seduced to the dark side and eventually became the leader of the sect. During the Great Sith War, the Krath became the military arm of Exar Kun's Sith Order and fell with it on Yavin 4.
Revan's Sith Empire
The Sith Empire was temporarily resurrected by the fallen Jedi Revan and Malak. Built upon a hardened core of veterans from the Mandalorian Wars and a host of Jedi converts, the fledgling new galactic power very nearly succeeded in conquering the Republic during the Second Sith War. After the redemption of Darth Revan and the death of Darth Malak, their Empire splintered into factions and eventually collapsed.
Sith Triumvirate
The Sith Triumvirate was a brief but deadly Sith Order founded by the former Jedi Kreia, now known as Darth Traya, she took two apprentices of unknown origins and trained many new Sith at the Trayus Academy on Malachor V. After her exile from the Triumvirate the two remaining Sith Lords; Darth Nihilus, and Darth Sion executed the First Jedi Purge. The Sith Triumvirate was a loose alliance of what remained of Darth Revan's Sith Empire. It was solidified sometime after the Battle of Rakata Prime. This organization comprised several, if not hundreds of Sith apprentices, Sith Masters and most importantly, Sith Assassins. The members were eventually defeated by the Jedi Exile.
New Sith Empire
The New Sith Empire was founded by Darth Ruin, and was the vast area of galactic territory formed out of the Fourth Great Schism, which the Sith ruled over with an iron fist. Its capital was the planet Roon. At its height during the New Sith Wars, it was almost as good as the old Sith Empires of Naga Sadow and Darth Revan; following the Battle of Mizra and during the Republic Dark Age, it encompassed a great percentage of the known Galaxy.
Sometime between 1,010 and 1,006 BBY the New Sith Empire collapsed in a civil war. From the ashes, Kaan established the Brotherhood of Darkness.
Brotherhood of Darkness
Founded by Lord Kaan, the Brotherhood of Darkness (sometimes referred to as the Dark Army) was the last mass gathering of the Sith for nearly 1200 years. An army of over twenty thousand Sith Lords and their followers, its destruction on Ruusan heralded the beginning of a new order.
Order of the Sith Lords
Under the last surviving Sith Lord of that army, Darth Bane, a new Sith Order was created as a result of the devastating Seventh Battle of Ruusan, which saw the annihilation of the previous Sith Order. Bane's Sith Order, known formally as the Order of the Sith Lords, was founded upon the principles of Darth Revan's Holocron, where from he formed the Rule of Two, utilizing stealth tactics and treachery to achieve their means. The Rule of Two would allow his eventual successor, Darth Sidious, to finally triumph over the Jedi and the Galactic Republic nearly 1,000 years later.
Disciples of Ragnos
The Disciples of Ragnos was a Sith Cult under the leadership of Tavion Axmis, who sought to resurrect the spirit of Marka Ragnos through ancient Sith sorcery and take control of the galaxy. The cult was closely related to the Empire Reborn movement of which Tavion had herself been part with the Dark Jedi Desann. The cult was ultimately defeated by Jaden Korr and the New Jedi Order.
Lumiya's Sith
Lumiya's Sith were a loosely collected group of individuals associated with Lumiya, self-proclaimed Dark Lady of the Sith after the final death of Darth Sidious. Even with Palpatine's final death, the Sith continued to survive. Their next Sith Lord was an Emperor's Hand named Lumiya. Darth Vader had passed on to Lumiya some Sith teaching secretly from his master, and the woman adopted the title "Dark Lady of the Sith" upon her masters' death at Endor. She trained two apprentices: Flint, who was redeemed by Vader's son Luke Skywalker, and Carnor Jax, who was killed by Palpatine loyalist Kir Kanos.
Soon afterwards she succeeded in convincing Vader's grandson Jacen Solo to join the ranks of the Sith, thus calling himself Darth Caedus. Darth Caedus later corrupted the Jedi Tahiri Veila and took her as his apprentice. However, following the death of Caedus and the redemption of his apprentice, the war Lumiya had started was over; and Lumiya's Sith had perished.
One Sith
By the year 130 ABY, a new Sith Order had risen to take the place of Darth Bane's order. It is known that a Sith known as Darth Krayt began the order on Korriban, the ancient Sith burial world, around 30 ABY. In this new Sith cult, many of the followers sported a red-and-black tattooed appearance and used lightsabers with an yorik coral-styled hilt design. This Sith Order was considered heretical by the Sith of the past. Krayt spent over a century growing and strengthening the new order, planning to unify the galaxy once more under Sith rule. He and his new order made their presence known around 127-130 ABY by initiating the Sith-Imperial War, and then launching an attack on the Jedi on Ossus.
Ranks
The Sith had a clearly defined hierarchy which divided the strong from the weak, but because the Sith order existed in numerous disparate incarnations, the Sith hierarchy did not maintain a single continuous ranking system throughout its history. The Sith hierarchy remained much the same for almost 6,000 years - through the ancient Sith Empire, Exar Kun's Brotherhood of the Sith, and Darth Revan's Sith Empire - until Lord Kaan declared that all of his highest ranking followers in the Brotherhood of Darkness were Dark Lords of the Sith. Like the Jedi and the Old Republic, the Sith underwent a great reformation after the apocalyptic final Battle of Ruusan. The Sith order's destruction inspired Darth Bane to reform the order and decree that there would be only two Sith at a time from that point forward: a Master and an apprentice. Both would bear the title "Dark Lord of the Sith," which would become synonymous with the term "Sith Lord."
Sith Empire
These were the ranks of the Sith Order before Darth Bane instituted the Rule of Two.
Dark Lord of the Sith
Darth Sidious, a Dark Lord of the Sith.
Darth Sidious, a Dark Lord of the Sith.
Dark Lords of the Sith were the greatest and most powerful of the Sith Lords. Up until the reign of Kaan, it was a title that was only given to those that were acknowledged as the leaders of their order, but by the end of the New Sith Wars the title was held by many Sith Lords simultaneously.
Sith Lord
Sith Lords were the leaders of the Sith. They commanded armies of Sith Minions, Acolytes and Warriors during wartime and ruled through a governing body known as the Sith council. Sith Lords used the dark side of the Force to inflict misery, suffering, and corruption. They were also tasked with preserving the lore of the Sith by passing all their knowledge on to their acolytes. While they did not enter combat as often as lesser Sith (preferring to use pawns, servants, or proxies), they were the most fearsome of the Sith as they were the keepers of the Sith's greatest secrets and wielders of its most potent sorceries.
Sith Marauder
Sith Marauders, a variant of the Sith Warriors, were often responsible for the most brutal acts carried out by the Sith. Their training emphasized the aggressive use of a lightsaber rather than the Force. A Sith Marauder's berserk physical prowess was a dark side technique fueled by hatred, rage, and cruelty. Thus, most Marauders could duel an average Jedi toe-to-toe and win easily. Caring little for the subtleties of manipulating others and lacking a deep understanding of the Force, Marauders were often burdened with carrying out the wishes of the Sith Lords.
Sith Warrior
Sith Warrior was a rank of the Sith order before Darth Bane's reform of the Sith Order. They were mid-ranking Sith who generally focused their energies and skills towards battle, spending little time on actual dark side philosophy or other concerns of the "purer" Sith.
Sith Acolyte
Sith Acolyte were Force-sensitive apprentices who had only just started down the dark path under the tutelage of a more experienced Sith.
Sith adept
Sith Adept was a Sith rank during the New Sith Wars, similar to Sith acolyte. The Brotherhood of Darkness trained them in the Dathomir Academy and Iridonia Academy.
Sith Assassin
A Sith Assassin.
A Sith Assassin.
Specialized Sith minions included Sith Assassins, who preferred to ambush targets from the shadows rather than engaging them in standard combat. Almost always working solo or in small groups, they utilized stealth field generators and the rare art of Force camouflage to launch surprise attacks on their Jedi victims. While some used a lightsaber, most fought with more conventional melee weapons such as force pikes. Darth Traya, Darth Sion, and Darth Nihilus commanded legions of Sith Assassins during the aftermath of the Jedi Civil War, causing the near-extermination of the Jedi Order. The Sith Assassins drew their powers from the Force power of their enemies.
Sith Minion
Sith Minions were the lowliest members of the Sith. Some were not even Force-sensitive, and often worshiped the Sith Lords as gods. Sith Cultists, Sith Assassins and Sith Marauders can be considered examples of Sith Minions. However, the Sith also used soldiers, mercenaries, and conscripts to work for them.
Post-Bane

"Two there should be; no more, no less. One to embody power, the other to crave it."
―Darth Bane[src]
To ensure the continued survival of the Sith, Bane was forced to put them on the brink of extinction. He instituted the Rule of Two. In Bane's order, both Sith held the title Dark Lord of the Sith. The rule of the two instituted that a master train an apprentice. Once the apprentice was fully trained, he would kill the master and take on the mantle himself and repeat the process. The death of the master is either a ceremonial killing or an assassination.
Sith Master
Sith Masters were Sith Lords that had an apprentice serving beneath them. Other than Bane, notable Sith Masters include Darth Plagueis and his successor; Darth Sidious.
Sith apprentice
Sith apprentices were Sith neophytes that were studying under the tutelage of a Sith Master. Notable Sith apprentices include Darth Zannah, Darth Maul, Darth Tyr!@#$ and Darth Vader.
Dark Side Adepts
Dark Side Adepts were not technically Sith. These Force-sensitives were chosen and honed by the Sith apprentice. Essentially, adepts were candidates to replace the Apprentice when he or she was killed or ascended to mastery. Notables included Darth Tyr!@#$'s Dark Acolytes, whose numbers included Sora Bulq and the infamous Asajj Ventress, or Darth Vader's secret apprentices Galen Marek and Tao.

"Once more, the Sith will rule the galaxy…and we shall have peace."
―Darth Sidious, to Darth Vader[src]
When Palpatine declared himself Galactic Emperor, the Sith controlled the known galaxy, in a political sense, for the first time. With this new, far-reaching authority came a need for functionaries throughout the Empire who were, to one extent or another, supporters if not adherents of the dark side. Though not Sith in any strict sense, these quasi-Sith minions were known generally as Dark Side Adepts. As Force-sensitive individuals serving the Emperor, they supported his Sith rule by working in the roles of servants, agents, intelligence operatives, military officials, etc. Dark Side Adepts were particularly important when Palpatine was reborn into his clone bodies, six years after his death.
Inquisitorius
The Inquisitorius was a secret division of Imperial Intelligence consisting of dark side Force-sensitive agents known as Inquisitors (sometimes also as Inquisitioners), or "truth officers".
Under the control of Darth Vader, these Inquisitors were considered the highest ranking of the Dark Side Adepts, outranking the Emperor's Hands, Prophets of the Dark Side, and lesser Dark Jedi. They reported directly to Emperor Palpatine.
Prophets of the Dark Side

The Dark Side Prophets were an ancient Outer Rim renegade Sith order founded by Darth Millennial. Though not Banist Sith, the Prophets were arguably a kind of true Sith. Darth Sidious rediscovered the group and brought them once again under his control, renaming them the Emperor's Mages.
Emperor's Hands
Emperor's Hands were top-secret special operatives trained in the Force by the Emperor himself. They were so secret they usually had no knowledge of each other. Mara Jade was one of the best-known Emperor's Hands.
Together with the Emperor's Mages, the Emperor's Hands were called the Dark Side Elite.
Imperial Royal Guard
These were hand-picked elite stormtroopers assigned to protect and serve the Emperor directly. Force sensitivity was by no means a requirement. Those with advanced talents, however, were assigned as Sovereign Protectors, and those with even more advanced talents underwent Force training under Dark Jedi tutors.
Dark Jedi
Although the name might imply otherwise, Dark Jedi were not synonymous with Sith, although Darth Vader among others used techniques drawn from the traditions of both the Dark Jedi and the Sith. Dark Jedi were distinguished from the Sith in the fact that Dark Jedi just used the dark side, whereas the Sith abided by the religion and codes passed down through the holocrons. It was much more likely for Dark Jedi to return to the Light (e.g. Kam Solusar). Other notable Dark Jedi included Joruus C'baoth and Jerec.

Some of the most prominent Legacy era Sith with their leader, Darth Krayt (left).
By the year 130 ABY a new Sith Order had risen to take the place of that of Darth Bane's order. Krayt abolished Darth Bane's Rule of Two. Instead, there would be the Rule of One—that One being the Sith Order itself, under which there would be many Sith Minions.
Ruled by Krayt, the new Sith Order flourished and a chance for Galactic domination presented itself. The reverse Vong-forming of worlds was sabotaged and when the galaxy at large blamed and persecuted the Yuuzhan Vong, the GA and Jedi Order were split down the middle. In the midst of the New Galactic Civil War the Imperial Remnant joined forces with the Legacy Sith and brought the galaxy to its knees. The new Sith, however, betrayed the Empire and deposed the Emperor. Darth Krayt assumed the throne of the Empire. But the deposed Emperor, Roan Fel, set up a rival faction of the Empire that remained loyal to him. Each side tried to dominate the Galaxy in the years to come.
It is known that a Sith known as Darth Krayt began the order on Korriban, the ancient Sith burial world, around 30 ABY. In this new Sith cult, many of the followers sported a red and black tattooed appearance.
Fist
The Fist was a Sith Lord who served as the supreme military commander for the new Sith Order. The Fist was appointed to the position by Darth Krayt. As of 137 ABY Darth Stryfe served as Krayt's Fist. At the Massacre of Ossus, Darth Nihl was the Fist, but was made a Hand when his predecessor was killed during the battle.
Hands
The Hands were Darth Krayt's most able servants, trained and existing to carry out his will. They took only his orders, and reported only to him.
By 137 ABY, Krayt's only Hand was Darth Nihl, having been given the post when his predecessor died unexpectedly. That year, he made Darth Talon into his second Hand, a fact that displeased Nihl.
Sith Intelligence and Assassination
Sith Intelligence and Assassination was an agency of the new Sith Order of Darth Krayt. It was in charge of spying, political murder, and torture. Around 130 ABY, it was headed by Darth Maladi. Jor Torlin was one of its ranking agents.
Darth Maladi's laboratory, in the Temple of the Sith, was a location of Sith Intelligence and Assassination

"But in their hearts they never forgot the Jedi. The hatred for the Jedi Order burns in their veins like fire, and it echoes in their teachings."

Palpatine Era

"For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times. Before the Empire."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi[src]
A Jedi was a member of the Jedi Order, which studied, served and used the mystical energies of the Force; more specifically, the light side of the Force. The Jedi fought for peace and justice in the Galactic Republic, often against their mortal enemies, the Sith, who studied the dark side of the Force. Although the Order was twice almost destroyed, first by the Sith Empire of Darth Revan and 4,000 years later by the Great Jedi Purge of Darth Sidious, the Order lived on due in large part to the efforts of Luke Skywalker, who forged a New Jedi Order to defend first the New Republic, and later its successor, the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances.

[edit] History
Main article: History of the Jedi Order
Originally formed as a philosophical study group situated on the planet Tython, the Jedi became revered as guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. As mystical wielders of the Force and of their glowing, signature lightsabers, their powers inspired awe in most of the galaxy's citizens. The calm, considered demeanor of the Jedi made them ideal brokers of peace in times of conflict or dispute. Yet, for all their power and diversity, the Jedi were few. Often beset by foes in times of doubt and confusion, undercurrents of evil often challenged their order and the establishment they served, the most notable being the Sith. These dark warriors were the antithesis of the Jedi, their sworn enemies, and the battle between them brought the galaxy to war more than once. In times of crisis, the Sith influence could even block the sight of the Jedi Order.

The main entrance into the Temple, flanked by huge bronze statues of the ancient Jedi known as the Four Masters.
The way of the Jedi had become the way of wisdom and patience, backed by swift and decisive action when necessary. However, the Jedi Council sometimes showed what appeared to be a lack of decisiveness, such as during the Mandalorian Wars, preferring to work with events and patterns over the long term. Their inaction spurred Revan to fight back, and eventually led to the Jedi Civil War. To the rest of the galaxy, the line between Jedi and Sith became blurred during the conflict, and both sides were blamed for the destruction wrought on worlds such as Katarr, Telos, and Dantooine.
Through intricate planning and dazzling adaptability, one Sith Master (Senator Palpatine of Naboo) even rose to the office of Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, engineered a war, and undermined the Jedi until he could, in one swift, masterful stroke, destroy the Jedi Order and enslave the galaxy beneath his banner as Emperor. Yet even this catastrophe failed to eradicate the Jedi completely, and, within a generation, they had returned to once again protect and nurture the galaxy with their wisdom and guidance. The Jedi were a source of morale for the New Republic.

There is no emotion; there is peace.
There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.
There is no passion; there is serenity.
There is no chaos; there is harmony.
There is no death; there is the Force.
— The Jedi Code [src]
Becoming a Jedi required the most profound commitment and astute mind. The life of a Jedi was one of sacrifice. To hinder transgression, those who showed an aptitude for the Force were taken directly from birth (or soon afterward) to train in the Jedi Temple headquartered on Coruscant or at smaller Jedi Enclaves. From the beginning of their training a Jedi was expected to adhere to a strict Code that included concepts such as rational thought, patience, and benevolence. Emotions such as hate, anger, and fear were thought to be destructive and lead to the dark side, so such things were banned from Jedi practice.

Almost all youthful Jedi were initially called Younglings and instructed in "clans" by a venerable, experienced Jedi Master, learning the ways of the Jedi and the powers of the Force. After Ruusan it had become normal that the Jedi trainees were always children. Once Yavin 4 had been established as Jedi headquarters, the Jedi initiates, which were no longer children, were trained first under the direction of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, and, in time, under another Master's direction in groups. When the New Jedi Order began, the Younglings were again trained in clans from childhood.
When an individual student achieved satisfactory understanding of the Jedi way, they were usually taken under the wing of another Jedi member and instructed individually to complete their training. Masters typically brought their Padawans along on missions, and later sent them on missions of their own, to allow them to gain experience and learn from practice.

"One of the ways the Jedi learn to know the Force, is to use the lightsaber as an instrument of meditation. The lightsaber is not only a weapon of defense—it is important for focusing the mind. A Jedi uses his lightsaber to assist his connection to the Force."

The traditional Jedi weapon was the lightsaber, which, in the hands of a skilled wielder, could be deadly in combat, even against opponents armed with ranged weapons. To attain this level of skill, however, required great focus and training. Students practiced the rubrics of lightsaber combat with a remote, and children used training lightsabers. They also dueled fellow Jedi as a test of their skills.
Due to all the weight being in the hilt, Jedi needed heightened awareness, thus, such conditioning honed their attunement to the Force. Since the binding of a lightsaber's intricate innards and the initial charging of the power cell also required knowledge of the Force to implement, the Padawan is tasked with constructing their own lightsaber as part of their training, using a force crystal, (for example found on the ice planet of Ilum), that focuses the crystal's energy thus creating the lightsaber's blade.
During the Jedi Civil War era, many Cerean Jedi used specially-forged Kasha lightsaber crystals as a meditative tool; by incorporating such crystals into their training regimens, they helped to clear the wielder's mind of distractions, even during tense physical combat. Further, it was a task in itself to find components for the lightsaber. Meditation in a crystal cave on a planet such as Ilum or Dantooine would often produce an image in the Jedi's mind about the lightsaber they were to build. The construction of a lightsaber was considered a milestone on the path to Jedi Knighthood, and took on a heavily symbolic meaning.
During the times of the Old Republic, it was a customary practice for a Jedi Master to present their own personal lightsaber as a gift to their most accomplished student. Jedi apprentice Nomi Sunrider was the recipient of one such lightsaber, receiving the weapon from Master Thon as a testament to the potential for greatness he recognized within her. Though the apprentice was indeed grateful for receiving such an honored gift, their Master would still stress the importance of knowing how to build one, requiring or even demanding that eventually the apprentice learns to construct their own, unique, lightsaber.
[edit] Way of life
"Training to become a Jedi is not an easy challenge, and even if you succeed, it's a hard life."
―Qui-Gon Jinn[src]
In following the Code, Jedi behavior was rigidly structured to uphold self-discipline, responsibility, and public service. The Jedi conquered emotions and materialism. They honored life, the law, the order itself and the master-student relationship. Jedi rendered aid to support and defend the weak; compassion was "encouraged." Rules of engagement included such notions as understanding the dark and light in all things, learning to see accurately, opening their eyes to what was not evident and exercising caution, even in trivial matters. Above all, Jedi upheld their duty to the Republic and embraced the Force. The Jedi before the Ruusan Reformation typically had more leeway in their dealings, as the Order was more loosely organized and the individual Knights and Masters granted greater personal freedom. Afterward, the Order was more centrally regulated by the High Council.
"The Jedi use their power for good. The Jedi are selfless. They only care about others."
―Anakin Skywalker[src]
Early Jedi were known to utilize shields and armor to protect themselves in battle, and used blaster pistols as well as lightsabers in combat. Later, as the lightsaber became a more self-contained weapon without an external power pack, the Jedi chose to carry it as their sole "tool" of defense and offense. The lightsaber was considered more a tool than a weapon. The lightsaber came to fulfill both a symbolic and pragmatic role for the Jedi; it identified the wielder, had a powerful visual impact, and given the availability of cybernetic replacement limbs might have been seen as a more 'clean' weapon than the blaster, which Obi-Wan regarded as "uncivilized," "clumsy" and "random."
The Jedi of the pre-Reformation era, (Old Jedi Order), also do not seem to have had any formal dress code, and dressed more or less as they saw fit, although traditional robes were favored by most Masters. These included a tunic, a cloak, and sometimes a tabard—usually in varied tones and shades of white and brown, though, gray was also quite common for the overtunic. The left side of the dress was always turned on the right part of the torso. After the Reformation, these robes became the typical Jedi clothing, even in battle. The Jedi also wore trousers, an obi, a leather utility belt, where they carried specialized field gear for their missions, and leather boots. The Jedi colors, which showed harmony with the Force, formed a stark contrast to the antithetical Sith, who were draped primarily in black.
In accordance with their philosophies of non-attachment, clothing was viewed as quite disposable. Indeed, possession itself was seen as forbidden as another form of attachment, and most Jedi lived out lives of material poverty, though the Order's infrastructure and the support of the Republic meant the Jedi did not lack for food, housing, or clothing.

"We are Jedi, our lives are not ours to live. We are pledged to serve a higher power than ourselves."
―Qui-Gon Jinn
Post-Ruusan Jedi were forbidden to hold strong attachments, as they were believed to lead to the emotions of the dark side. For this reason, Jedi were not allowed to marry. Anakin Skywalker would become testament to such Jedi circumspection, as his fear of losing his undisclosed wife, Padmé Amidala, ultimately caused his fall to darkness, but his connection to his son, Luke Skywalker, would later drive him back to the light. Although Jedi were not required to be chaste as well, many Jedi were due to sex being considered self-indulgence and an unnecessary act. At least one special case was recorded in this arrangement: Ki-Adi-Mundi who, due to low Cerean birth-rates, was permitted to have a polygamous marriage, and fathered seven daughters. Ranik Solusar was disciplined by the Council for his marriage and the child it produced, but was not expelled from the order.
Despite this restriction, Jedi were known to have secret, clandestine relationships, whether with non-Jedi, such as the marriages of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Quinlan Vos and Khaleen Hentz, and Etain Tur-Mukan and Clone Commando Darman; or within the Jedi Order itself—such as the relationships of Kit Fisto and Aayla Secura, Qui-Gon Jinn and Tahl, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Siri Tachi, and Tholme and Tr'a Saa. Many of these relationships did not lead to mishap. Further, Revan shared a romantic affection with Bastila Shan, who was redeemed by him after her fall.
"Adventure…excitement…a Jedi craves not these things."
―Yoda[src]
Others openly defied the High Council on this matter. This led to particular strife with Jolee Bindo and his wife, Nayama Bindo, during the Great Sith War. Bindo trained his wife in the ways of the Force, but she soon fell to the dark side. He was not expelled from the order, and instead was to be promoted to the rank of Jedi Knight. He then lost faith in the wisdom of the Council and left the order.
Up to the Ruusan Reformation, some Jedi did practice marriage and were known to have families of their own. There were even cases of families consisting entirely of Jedi, such as that of Andur Sunrider. The children of Jedi families were often gifted in the Force. Even later in the order, such families existed—though the continuation of the line was through those family members who did not become Jedi. Famous Jedi families of the late Republic included the Koon family and the Diath family.
However, it appears that some Jedi might have been granted the right to marry, not as a special case, but as a norm. Several Corellian Jedi (Keiran Halcyon and Nejaa Halcyon during the Old Republic, and Corran Horn in the time of the New Republic) were allowed to marry and raise children without repercussion. Whether this was due to an agreement between the Jedi and the planetary government—Corellia is known for its family-centric culture—or purely personal choices made against the Jedi Code is not known. However, as Corellian Jedi often had many other noticeable differences from the traditional Jedi ways, such as in clothing and a reluctance to take on missions outside of their home system, it is possible that Corellian Jedi were allowed to engage in practices that had been banned by the Council in later years.
By the time of the New Jedi Order, the practice of forbidding or discouraging marriages had been discarded, as many of the Order's members had spouses and children, including the Order's grand master himself, whose wife was another Jedi Master.
The way of the Jedi was a life-long path, and a Jedi usually remained part of the Order their entire life—learning more about the Order and the Force and following the will of the Jedi Council. Up until the beginning of the Clone Wars, only twenty Jedi (of rank Master or higher) were said to have ever left the Order (although there is some debate as to whether this means the post-Ruusan Order, the Order after some earlier point in its history, or literally in its entire history), of which the most prominent were Count Dooku and Master Phanius. These were commonly referred to as the Lost Twenty, or simply "The Lost".

Obi-Wan Kenobi, a master of mind tricks.
The Jedi were unified by their study of the Force: an "energy field" that emanated from every living thing. The Jedi sought to understand the Force so that they could use its power to protect and aid the people that they served. The Jedi believed that the Force could be harnessed through careful study and contemplation to benefit the user and the world around them. As they studied the light side of the Force, the Jedi encouraged their members only to use the Force for healing and defense—never in anger or fear. Unfortunately, several of the Jedi order throughout history disagreed with this view, arguing that other, darker uses of the Force should be allowed. This disagreement was one of the main issues the Jedi faced in their constant battle with the Sith.
The Jedi focus their lives on understanding and strengthening their connection, or oneness, with the Force to allow them to manipulate it as an extension of themselves (by contrast, Sith merely enforce control over the Force). This connection is increased by rigorous training and meditation to achieve a state of mental, physical, emotional and spiritual harmony, a kind of inner peace. As the path requires such great discipline and may extend a Jedi's life, most Jedi never reach their true potential. Further attempts to achieve this potential may meet with failure and cause frustration in Jedi, resulting in a lesser connection and more frustration in turn. This is the main reason why Sith consider themselves stronger than Jedi, as few Jedi have shown the true limits of the light side's power and those who have seldom use it.
"A Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression. The dark side of the Force are they. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight."
―Yoda[src]
The dark side of the Force brought with it a great temptation for many Jedi; to many the dark side seemed a quicker and easier path. Pursuit of the dark side, however, was a self-destructive endeavor, and many Jedi who tasted dark powers found it harder and harder to turn away. Though some Jedi could be redeemed back to the path of the light, many fell and became Dark Jedi, some of whom were members of the Sith Order. Further, the pall of the dark side could diminish Jedi ability, clouding their insights into important matters. For these reasons, practice of dark Force powers was expressly forbidden by the Jedi Council. Those fallen to the dark side, however, the Jedi tried to save. To the Jedi, killing was a last resort. This quality was at once a strength and a weakness of the Order.

"Jedi do not fight for peace. That's only a slogan, and is as misleading as slogans always are. Jedi fight for civilization, because only civilization creates peace. We fight for justice because justice is the fundamental bedrock of civilization: an unjust civilization is built upon sand. It does not long survive a storm."
―Mace Windu[src]
The strength of the Jedi Code and organization rested on three core tenets.
* Self-discipline
* Knowledge, as contained in the Jedi Archives
* The Force, a universal energy that binds all things and also has many relations to midi-chlorians
When used correctly, these allowed a Jedi to solve any problem and overcome any obstacle, helping to make the galaxy a better place.
[edit] Jedi ranks
"What kind of nonsense is this?! Put me on the Council and not make me a Master? It's never been done in the history of the Jedi. It's insulting!"
―Anakin Skywalker[src]
As the Jedi instructed their members in the ways of the Jedi Code and the Force, each member progressed through four basic levels of rank.
Jedi younglings.
Jedi younglings.
[edit] Hierarchy
* Jedi Initiate (or Youngling or "Jedi Hopeful") – a Force-sensitive child. Often a prospective Jedi was detected through blood sampling—those with great Force potential had high midi-chlorian counts in their bloodstream. At a very young age, children were removed from their families and assigned to the Jedi Temple for training. Younglings were taught in communal groups known as clans. At some points in history, this stage of training was also called the Jedi Apprentice stage. This was particularly true during the ancient wars when Jedi often started training older beings, and "Youngling" wouldn't fit. The older use of this term should not be confused with the Padawan stage.
* Jedi Padawan – an apprentice who began serious tutelage under a single Jedi Knight or Jedi Master. In order to graduate to Padawan status, an Initiate was required to be chosen by a Knight or Master and taken as their sole pupil. If a youngling was not chosen to be a Padawan by 13 years of age, the youngling was placed into another, lesser role in the Jedi Service Corps, or they could choose to leave the Order. Depending on where the student's talents lay, this might be the Agricultural Corps, the Medical Corps, or the Exploration Corps. Padawans who were of a haired species typically wore a long braid of hair behind their right ear. When a Padawan was elevated to Knighthood the braid was cut during the knighting ceremony. At least a few Jedi, though, were elevated to Knighthood simply by being told that they had passed whatever trials were considered necessary—most notably Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Vergere. Some exceptions of late acceptances to Padawan training were made, most notably in the case of Anakin Skywalker. In the days of the old Order, an Initiate could become a Padawan by passing less formal trials (understanding the Code, building a lightsaber, and facing a trial of the dark side itself)[1].
* Jedi Knight – a disciplined Padawan could become a fully trained Jedi once they completed "the trials." The known trials were, but weren't limited to: the Trial of Flesh, the Trial of Courage, the Trial of Skill and the Trial of Self (also known as "facing the mirror").
A Padawan and a Master.
A Padawan and a Master.
* Jedi Master – a Jedi Knight who showed great understanding of the Force and managed to instruct a Padawan and train them successfully to the level of a Jedi Knight. This title could also be achieved through the performance of extraordinary deeds, or retaking the trials. Self-proclamation of the Jedi Master title was rare and frowned upon by the Jedi Council (for example: Jorus C'baoth and his unknown clone Joruus C'baoth).
o Councilor (or Council Member) – A very few Jedi were invited to serve on the Jedi Council, the governing body of the Order. The Council was made up exclusively of wise, experienced Masters. The only Jedi Knight to sit on the High Council, Anakin Skywalker, was appointed by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, although he was not granted the rank of Master simply because of this. Ki-Adi-Mundi served as a Councilor while undergoing the process of becoming a Master at the time of his invitation before Anakin. The Council was made up of 12 masters, five of them holding life terms (two of them designated as "senior"), four holding long-terms, and three holding short-terms.
o Master of the Order – The title used to denote the leader of the Jedi High Council. This title was held by Mace Windu until the beginning of the Clone Wars in 22 BBY, when he gave the title to Yoda.[2]
* Grand Master – The highest rank of the Jedi Order was that of Grand Master. Yoda was once the Grand Master, as was Luke Skywalker following the Swarm War.
A Jedi Knight or Jedi Master could have only one apprentice at a time, and the Padawan had to be promoted to the rank of Jedi Knight before another apprentice could be chosen. Several thousand years before the events of the Ruusan Reformation, however, masters were allowed to have more than one apprentice, as evidenced by Master Arca Jeth having three—the brothers Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma and the Twi'lek Tott Doneeta. When the New Jedi Order first began, Luke Skywalker had to assign several students to one master due to the few Jedi in the Order; for example, Kyle Katarn had Jaden Korr and Rosh Penin both assigned to him. During both of these vastly different time periods, the term "Padawan" was not used, thereby strengthening the association of the word with the one-master-one-student policy.
[edit] Specialization
Being a Jedi was a life of great variation as the Jedi Order had several responsibilities. While many Jedi were generalists, some would specialize in one or more areas either in accordance with their own interests and preferences, or because they were delegated responsibility for an area that required specialization. With these specializations often came specific Jedi ranks. Moreover, in certain periods of the history of the galaxy, some Jedi would assume military ranks fighting alongside Republic forces.
[edit] Military and warfare
"Wars not make one great!"
―Yoda[src]
In times of war, especially when Sith forces were involved, Jedi would sometimes assume military ranks and govern armies of Republic military units, as was seen in the Mandalorian Wars, the Jedi Civil War, the New Sith Wars, and the Clone Wars. So Jedi indeed became soldiers, not just keepers of the peace.

* Jedi Commander – a Padawan serving as a Commander in the Grand Army of the Republic, the Jedi Commander was assigned to a Jedi General until knighted. Once a full Jedi, the Padawan is now referred to as General.
* Jedi General – a Jedi Knight who had been placed in command of a Republic army. Considered a full General.
* Senior Jedi General – a Jedi Master that is not on the Council serving as a general in the Clone Wars. The Senior Jedi General was very experienced in warfare and battle tactics.
* High Jedi General – a member of the Jedi Council serving as a Jedi General during the Clone Wars, the High Jedi General would not only command their own army, but also supervise other Jedi Senior Generals, Jedi Generals and Jedi Commanders. Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Mace Windu were all notable High Jedi Generals.
* Jedi Lord – a Jedi who served as a commander in the Army of Light during the New Sith Wars. The Jedi Lord assumed this title mainly out of political motivation. The rank was abolished after the war.
In addition to the ordinary military ranks, there were a number of ranks and titles based on specialization in areas of warfare and combat.
* Force Warrior – a Jedi who was skilled in a special type of unarmed combat, using meditative martial arts and the Force.
* Jedi Ace – a Jedi who had specialized in starfighter combat, combining piloting skills with mastery of the Force.
* Jedi Gatemaster – the Jedi who served as the keeper of the main entrance at the Jedi Temple. These Jedi were usually trained in a special way.
* Jedi Guardian – a Jedi Master who was especially skilled in battle, the Guardian would concentrate mainly on martial training and combat in general without losing focus on diplomacy and the philosophies of the Force.
* Jedi Consular – a Jedi Master who was especially skilled in applications of the Force, the Consular would concentrate primarily on the diplomacy and the powers and philosophies of the Force. Similar to the Force Warrior.
* Jedi Sentinel – The balance point between Guardians and Consulars, Sentinels would focus on balancing between applications of the Force and combat skills.
* Jedi Weapon Master – a Jedi Master who focused solely on battle, the Weapon Master was among the greatest physical fighters of the Order.

* Jedi Watchman – The equivalent of the Jedi Sentinel, the Jedi Watchman investigated the mysteries of the galaxy and sought out injustice and harm and brought it into the light. A Jedi Watchman was assigned to watch over a particular system in the galaxy, and served it in all means.
[edit] Healing
"When we do appear we can be killers, but we can also be healers. Thank the Force for that."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi
* Jedi Healer – Some Jedi would focus on the more Humanitarian aspects of the Force, specializing in Force powers based on Force healing. In addition to knowledge of such Force powers, also had extensive knowledge of medicine and medical technology. Jedi healers were normally stationed at the Jedi Medical Corps Infirmary, but would also serve in the field. For instance, around the time of the Clone Wars, Jedi healers would serve aboard MedStar frigates and, occasionally, in Republic's mobile surgical units ("Rimsoos").
[edit] Culture, history, and knowledge
"In a dark place we find ourselves… a little more knowledge might light our way."
―Yoda
Some Jedi would specialize in lore, such as the history of the galaxy, the Force, and the Jedi Order, producing invaluable knowledge.

* Jedi archaeologist – a Jedi who had specialized in gaining historical knowledge through archaeology, the Jedi archaeologist was often a member of the ExplorCorps and involved in expeditions of various kinds.
* Jedi historian – a Jedi who had specialized in chronicling the history of the galaxy and the Jedi Order, the Jedi historian knew virtually everything about the past of the Jedi Order.
* Jedi librarian – a Jedi who had specialized in administrating vast databases of knowledge, the Jedi librarian was in charge of an important Jedi library, such as the ancient Great Jedi Library, the library of the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine, or the Jedi Archives.
* Jedi geologist – a Jedi who had specialized in geology.

Jedi were often called upon to act as impartial diplomats, possibly due to the Order's traditions of detachment from secular society and the phenomenon of Force-guided intuition. They would serve as moderators and negotiators during disputes, and their judgments were often recognized as just and binding. When acting as diplomats, Jedi took the utmost care to be impartial and fair-minded. The legacy of this impartiality was such that, decades after the Jedi Purge and Palpatine's false accusations of the corruption of the Jedi Order, the legend of Jedi impartiality lived on in the memories of some sections of galactic society. Some species who respected the Jedi – for example, the Barabel – retained a tradition of calling upon a Jedi's impartial judgment even for minor interpersonal disputes.
While any Jedi could function as a mediator or diplomat – for example, Obi-Wan Kenobi, also known as The Negotiator due to his skills in this area – two dedicated classes of "diplomatic Jedi" are known to have existed prior to the Jedi Purge:
* Jedi Sentinel – Jedi that sought a balance between the intensive combat training of the Jedi Guardians and the wider philosophical views and teaching responsibilities of the Jedi Consulars. These Jedi ferreted out deceit and injustice, bringing it to light. They were generally employed in scouting missions and were skilled in security, computers, stealth techniques, or medicine, and also had diplomatic skills. Having said that the title of Jedi Sentinel was an ancient one dating back as far as the Jedi Civil War, and seems to have fallen into disuse by the time of the Jedi Purge.
* Jedi Watchmen – Jedi Watchmen were charged with overseeing a particular system or sector, thus serving as a type of liaison officer between the system or sector and the Jedi Council as well as the Republic in general. Jedi Watchmen were often highly skilled in diplomacy and possessed knowledge of the culture of the system or sector they oversaw. Often Jedi Watchmen originated from the system or sector they were tasked with overseeing.
[edit] Crime fighting and investigation
"You are under arrest, my lord."
―Mace Windu to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine[src]
The Jedi Order would also actively partake in crime-fighting as part of their role as keepers of the peace in the Republic. They would loosely police the galaxy, but there were also groups of Jedi specializing in crime detection, investigation, solving, and prevention.

* Jedi investigator – a Jedi specially appointed by the Council to uncover hidden and obscure threats to the galaxy such as powerful criminal syndicates, corruption and conspiracy against the Republic and other shady menaces. The Jedi investigator would often work alone and undercover to infiltrate suspicious organizations or would be busy investigating some act of crime.
* Jedi Sentinel – a Jedi Sentinel was the perfect balance between the Jedi Guardian and the Jedi Consular, possessing great skills in combat and knowledge in the force. This type of Jedi functioned like both the Jedi investigator and the Jedi Shadow, rooting out and destroying both crime and the dark side. In addition, the Jedi Sentinel also had skills in various other studies. However, it is unclear whether the Jedi Sentinel as a distinct class survived the Ruusan Reformation, and the title was an ancient one dating back at least as far as the Jedi Civil War.
* Jedi Shadow – a Jedi whose job was to seek out and destroy any sign of the dark side of the Force, the Jedi shadow was the Jedi Order's primary weapon against the dark side up until the Clone Wars. The Jedi Shadow was a Jedi tasked with infiltrating dark side groups and cults to expose them to justice.
[edit] Instruction
"For eight hundred years have I trained Jedi. My own counsel will I keep on who is to be trained. A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind."
―Yoda to Luke Skywalker[src]
In addition to the Master-Padawan model, some Jedi had specialized in teaching aspects of the Force and the skill required to be a Jedi.
Yoda served an important role in the Jedi Council, giving instruction to all Younglings.

* Jedi instructor – a Jedi accountable for giving general teachings to Younglings, Padawans, or the occasional older beings. Sometimes Council members, who were frequently at the Jedi Temple, where initial instruction commonly took place, served as Jedi instructors. However, most such mentors were stationed at a Jedi Praxeum or academy.
* Jedi battlemaster – a Jedi highly skilled in lightsaber combat, the Battlemaster was the lightsaber combat instructor of a Jedi Praxeum, Temple, or Academy.
* Jedi trainer – a Jedi student or Jedi Knight responsible for teaching and instructing a certain aspect of the Force, the Jedi trainer was a vital component in the education of Jedi Knights in the early years of the New Jedi Order.

Anakin Skywalker, the Son of the Suns.
"… A Jedi will come, to destroy the Sith, and bring balance to the Force. "
―The Great Holocron
The prophecy of the Chosen One was an ancient Jedi legend that foretold the coming of a being who was "to bring balance to the Force". This prophecy was interpreted by Qui-Gon and other Jedi to mean that he would destroy the Sith. Qui-Gon Jinn believed that a young Anakin Skywalker was that person when he discovered him in 32 BBY, because of Anakin's exceptionally high midi-chlorian count and unique birth.
"You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness!"
―Obi-Wan Kenobi[src]
It seemed that Anakin was not the Chosen One, since he fell to the Dark Side, and as Darth Vader, was a main figure in the destruction of the Jedi Order. However, in 4 ABY he redeemed himself with his decision to stand against Emperor Palpatine, sacrificing himself to save his son, Luke, and finally destroyed the Sith in the process, proving Qui-Gon and various others correct at last. With the deaths of both Sidious and Vader the Force was brought into a certain "balance".

The Baduu (Grey Jedi)
The Baadu, or Gray (Commonly called Uber, or Shadow) Jedi, are a rare breed of force users. They consciously try to remain neutral in the struggle between the Dark Side and the true ways of the Jedi. This is not an easy task, and it is harder to attain even a fair amount of neutrality when one is working with the Force. A very specialized Force Power (The Cleansing) is needed for the existence of the Baadu.
NOTE: Baadu are very rare. NO non-force users (except those with Extreme Scholarly knowledge of Jedi Lore) should have heard the term, and only Jedi Masters (or any Force users with Heavy Force skills) should have any knowledge of anything about them. Note that I say "heard," and not "be a fountain of youth in the Ways of the Baadu." You should not hear your favorite tavern owner spinning off tales of the dozens of Baadu-related stories that they?ve heard.
History of the Baadu:
The Way of the Baadu was spawned from Biirta Baadu, a human Jedi Master who flirted with the Dark Side for much of his very long, Force using life. He never actually became an adept of the Dark Side, but became quite well versed in its use. Biirta managed to develop a Force power that was able to keep him somewhat free from the clutches of the Dark Side. He was always just beyond reach. He never taught anybody his findings, but his journal survived. A few copies of his journal were made, and they exist scattered throughout the galaxy.
The Baadu tend to be very solitary. There is no unity in the ranks of the Baadu, and there may be enmity between members on the rare occasions they meet. The way of the Baadu is a lonely path, and few people can maintain the duality of consciousness it requires. On rare occasion, however, a Baadu might turn over to a more sociable personality, but this is also questionable, and it depends much ont he individual's personality, and how they came to be part of the Baadu. Most Baadu tend to lead "questionable" lives, doing things along the lines of bounty hunting, smuggling, etc. Although these acts are certainly illegal (for the most part), their evilness can be questioned...
The Baadu and Dark Side/Light Side (Force Attunement):
When a Baadu commits an evil act, he leans closer to the Dark Side, just like all of the other Force users of the galaxy. When a Baadu commits a good act, he leans closer toward the Light Side. Baadu are consistently attempting to have NO tendencies toward both. They want NO Light Side attunement and NO Dark Side attunement. This can be attained by one of two ways.
1) Removal of Force Side tendencies through Deeds:
The Baadu can remove a Dark Side tendency by not doing anything evil for ONE adventure/episode. Being "kind of good," but not good enough to lean toward the Light Side. Baadu should be able to remove a Dark Side tendency by not doing anything evil. Not necessarily being NICE, but even just the good side of neutral.
The Baadu can remove a Light Side attunement by not doing anything good for an adventure/episode. Being "kind of evil," but not evil enough to lean toward the Dark Side. Stuff like killing people that deserve to die, and REALLY enjoying it. Or, if a Baadu were working for the rebels, they?d be able to lean away from the Light Side by torturing an imperial person who wouldn?t talk, to get valuable information.
2) Removal of Force Side Points Through the Cleansing:
When Birtaa Baadu first decided to be a neutral force user, he found that method #1 was unwieldy and cumbersome. There were times when he didn?t know where he stood in his "alignment" at the moment. After years of intensive study, he managed to develop a unique and powerful force power?the Cleansing. The use of this power facilitated advancement through the force. Baadu wondered how he kept the path without it. There were setbacks, but Baadu found the bonuses of the power to outweigh the setbacks.
How to Forget the Ways of the Baadu:
1.) If you are using The Cleansing, stop.
2.) If you want to become a Dark Side force user, simply get rid of your Light Side habits and Tendencies, and advance your Dark Side Training. Once the Baadu?s Dark Side Training goes beyond Dark Apprentice, the Baadu way is forgotten, perhaps forever.
3.) The operation is the same if the Baadu character wishes to become a Jedi Knight. Simply get rid of all Dark Side habits and tendencies, and increase Light Side Training and excercises. (remember, the Dark side is quicker and easier) Once the Light Side Training reaches Gatherer, all Baadu hindrances and bonuses are lost.
Note: A Baadu character can exceed the Dark Side threshold of Dark Apprentice and still remain Baadu. To leave the way of the Baadu, a character must actively choose to leave, and the threshold must be exceeded.
The Baadu can use Dark Side Powers without automatically leaning toward the Dark Side, however they do lean to the Dark Side if the Dark Side power is used for extreme evil. It costs 50 - 100% more effort to raise force skills than a normal Jedi. For example, to raise the level of Control, with a Master it would take a diligent Training session.
Curiosities/Miscellaneous:
Most Baadu use lightsabers, but some favor blasters. It is a matter of personal preference. If a Baadu wishes their character to be a blaster toting Baadu, they should incorporate the abilities of the Teepo Paladins.
The Baadu Jedi have been a topic of many debates in the Star Wars Universe. Many people feel that the Baadu is a cheap way of allowing Jedi to commit evil acts. Jedi should never be allowed to do evil without consequence. That goes against everything the Force is about. The major component in Force using, which keeps a Jedi in check, is his emotional connection to the Force. You take this away and things just become ridiculous. On the other side of the argument are those who feel the nature of the Force is dynamic and always in motion. Nothing, especially something as fluid as the Force, is so cut and dry as to allow only two sides; there has to be a middle ground. The Baadu must maintain EXTREME control, to avoid slipping too far to either side. You must use EXTREME care in how you present yourself as a Baadu (Uber) Jedi.

Arcane Dictionary
I have assembled some of the most common words in the Arcane texts, and compiled their closest relative meanings from their use in Lore, including the effects of their use. These form the backbone of the Arcane "language". Using these words in different combinations and in different states of mind can unleash any number of powers within a Jedi. The language and state of mind must be precisely in sync, in order for the desired affect to come about. If it is not, or if something is misjudged, any sort of unknown effect, good or bad, may result.

Arcane Spells and Skills
These are only but a fraction of the spells featured in the ancient Tomes. There are probably many more that have not been discovered yet. Use these with caution, as they have the tendency to drain the user, and the User must "build up" his Force, to use these Spells. Once the user has learned how these sayings have triggered the use of the Force within them and how to maintain control while doing so, they can use the Force, flowing through them, to duplicate it. However, these spells will use what Force that the user has gathered, so extreme care and attention from a Master, is GREATLY reccomended.
These spells are only available to a Jedi that has at least a 3 in All Force Aspects (Control, Sense, and Alter...In other words, an Apprentice).

The Arcane "language" serves as the building blocks for learning to use such powers. It should be noted that the state of mind of the user of this language affects its outcome. It is theorized that the saying or thinking of these words triggers synapses in the brain, which triggers those strong enough in the Force to use the Force in a certain way. In such a cases, the state of mind of the user would, and does, affect the outcome. The commonplace for training is to build up abilities by experiences. The Arcane "language" is a key to learning abilities and how to be more at one with the Force and its mysteries.
It is also noted in Lore that the "language" is simply a key; a tool to unlock the powers of the Force, so that those inexperienced, or who luck sufficient exposure to it, may acquire such abilities. After proper practice combined with rigorous training, one can lean how it 'feels' to perfom a certain function and then can repeat it, without the use of the "language", but by 'feel'.

Modifications' Descriptions
Pressure Grip: A good modification for beginners. When the hilt is let go of (as in a drop or fumble) the blade automatically shuts off to reduce the chance of harming the user (or, God forbid, an innocent). Note: the Pressure Grip may be thrown but the user must use Telekinesis to keep pressure on the grip at all times.
Lock Blade: The Lock Blade is the opposite of the pressure grip. The saber stays on until the wielder shuts it off, thus allowing the user to throw the saber at a target.
Variable Lengths: This allows the saber to effectively have two blades (each with different lengths) which extend in the same direction. This allows a user to select the best length for the given task. This modification grants a good level of style when both blades are extended and of different colors, one outlining the other. The longer setting has 20% reduced effectiveness, however.
Dual Blades: With this modification the saber extends a blade out of each end thus resembling a lightstaff (a la Exar Kun). These are very difficult to properly wield as they may only be held in the middle and usually do more harm to the user than the intended target.
Light Suppression: For all the lamers out there who want to sacrifice all style, this modification exists. There are two ways to make this modification work. One is to "dim" the light made by the saber, and sacrificing 20% of base damage, and the other is to tune it to the UV or IR spectrums. If the later is the case only certain aliens or humans wearing goggles (or using Shift Sense) would be able to see the blade.
Sound Suppression: Another one for those without style. This modification reduces the famous hum of a lightsaber. With this modification it is very difficult to detect the user with sound.
Non-Metal Construction: This is rebuilding the saber from scratch with non-metal components to help fool scanners. A Very Difficult Sensors roll is required to detect such a weapon.
Ooze Blade Effect: This modification is the ultimate in style. Through using at least three different gems of different colors and set up with a special modulation, the colors within the blade create an "oozing like pattern" similar to a lava lamp. Although there probably aren?t any practical uses, there are tales of Jedi using the blade to hypnotize a target.

THE 9 CONCLUSIONS
The 9 conclusions are an expanded code, which once a Grey Jedi understands, helps a Gray Jedi to make decisions quickly. The 9 conclusions help a Grey Jedi understand the will of the Force Quickly.
