Movie Review: Clone Wars

"Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars"

Ever since Leia said these lines in A New Hope, people have always wondered "What were the Clone Wars? What did they entail?" Attack of the Clones showed the beginning; Revenge of the Sith showed the end; the Clone Wars animated shorts gave a taste of in between. And Clone Wars broadens our perception of the time in between.

Jabba the Hutt's son has been kidnapped and Jabba is demanding that the Jedi return him if the Republic wants passage through Hutt space. So Yoda sends Obi-Wan to negotiate with Jabba and Anakin with new Padawan learner, Ahsoka, are sent to retrieve the Huttling. Of course, appearances aren't what they seem as Asajj Ventress and Count Dooku are behind the kidnapping: all to achieve passage through Hutt Space and ruin the Republic.

The visual effects are superb, but this is Star Wars, did you expect anything less? Although animated, there is plenty of action--lightsabers, blasters, large armored tanks, etc.--that is given great treatment. The battles are intense, and you don't hover too much on the fact that the movie is animated and not real life. The characters are beautifully stylized. The voice actors should be applauded for their admirable work. And the reappearance of Sam Jackson, Anthonoy Daniels, and Christopher Lee are a welcome treat (particularly Lee since his character never had much screen-time).

About the biggest problem I have is with the character of Ahsoka. She is the typical teenager, the Mary Sue. She knows more than her Padawan status allows, teases Anakin like she is a veteran (with ridiculous names like "Sky-Guy, which I found inappropriate for a Master-Apprentice relationship), wields her lightsaber well enough to defeat three Magna Guards singlehandedly (when it took Obi-Wan and Anakin some time to do in ROTS), and has far too few imperfect moments. I really wanted to like Asokha, but after seeing the above, I could do no more than groan.

Another problem is the weak storyline. It is contrived for the sole purpose of displaying the gorgeous and well-done battle sequences. I have a hard time believing that the Hutt space is that critical to the war effort.

Overall, Star Wars fans will enjoy this much more than the average audience and even then, I do not think the quality of this movie compares with the Clone Wars animated shorts. I would give this a 3.5 stars. If you want to watch, I would suggest waiting until it comes on DVD.

Which Lightsaber form would you use?
created with QuizFarm.com
You scored as Form II: Makashi

After Form I's proliferation as a saber combat technique, Form II or "Way of the Ysalamiri," came about as a means of lightsaber-to-lightsaber combat. It is described as being very elegant, powerful, and requiring extreme precision. The blade manipulation required for this form is very refined and requires much focus, but the results are extremely powerful.

Count Dooku, from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, has mastered Form II to the highest degree, fighting with the precision built into the ancient technique.

  2. I agree with a lot of your assessment of the Clone Wars movie, although I somewhat disagree, the Hutts are very powerful, they run the Outer Rim region (smuggling, cargo transfers, bounties, etc.), so it was fine with me about the story. I agree the movie was short, and I didn't like the changes in the music, but I had no problem with Ahsoka, I guess I'm more open-minded to seeing variety in characters. I thought it was worth seeing once in the theater and getting it on DVD later. I gave it 8/10.
