The Legend of Creation
I wonder if you (any of you, younglings and old ones alike) remember the story of the galaxy's creation. I expect most of you heard it at least once, but you'll scoff at it now. You're too old, you say, or too stuck in science and history. The galaxy's moved on, past tall tales and silly fables, you think. I know you think that, most do. But you're wrong.
Now, don't get me wrong, science and history are great things, but they only go back so far. They only explain so much. There was a time before anything was invented, a time before anything was recorded. You don't believe me? You think your monitors and specialists can explain all? How very hard and cynical you've grown.
Tell me, what is your explanation for the Force? Hmm? You do believe in the Force, don't you? Yes, some of you deny its existence, I expected that, but in your hearts, deep down, you know the truth. Midi-chlorians? Sure, they're real enough, I don't deny them. And yes, they have their purpose, but they're not the Force. They're more of the tool used to access the Force, like a biological password, if you will.
No, the Force is real and the galaxy was created--not formed but created. Gather round and I'll tell you what I know of the tale from which the religions of the Force users were first based.
If you close your eyes, perhaps you'll have an idea of how things were at the beginning. It was dark then, and empty. Not like the space between stars or a black hole, mind you, but dark and endless.
How Guardian came to be in that vast nothingness is something I can't say. There are stories (mostly long dead and even more forgotten than this one) about that subject, but which is true is something I do not know. Some say there was a spark and in it or out of it Guardian was created. Some tell that Guardian came here, to this part of the universe, from elsewhere, once work there was complete or after destruction of a mistake had begun. Others, though I barely credit them, believe Guardian was simply the personification of the galaxy waiting to be. In any case, Guardian was here and it was not until Guardian was here, in this galaxy, that things began to happen.
Legend says that worlds were created first, forming in groups ranging in size from two at a time to nearly thirty at once. They began in their simplest forms, little more than the most basic physical elements, but evolved under Guardian's watchful control. In time, solar systems, asteroid belts, black holes, and comets came to be.
As the first section of galaxy gained substance, it gained life. Oceans and lakes were filled with fish, algae, and kelp. Trees and grasses began to grow and small creatures began to scurry across vast desert surfaces. And so the process was set.
As Guardian moved on to fill the rest of the galaxy, those small beings evolved and changed, growing in both size and intelligence. In time, some of these beings grew into ancient ancestors to many of the races we know today.
As the act of physically creating was finished, Guardian turned attention to guiding and helping. Guardian aided in the forming of governments, the creation of rules and laws, and the establishment of civilization. In time, what we think of as technology, in its most basic form, appeared. Like an indulgent parent, Guardian looked on.
Though fighting and planetbound wars had existed from some of the earliest days, Guardian found that as advancement continued, so grew violence and greed. Guardian's attention was torn between settling disputes, keeping peace, and maintaining what had been created. Over time, it became obvious that help was needed.
From the most evolved, dominate, educated races were chosen a select few to act for Guardian. These chosen ones were given the ability to tap into Guardian's power source. Through intentional workings of biology at the time of creation of these races none was able to tap even a one hundredth of Guardian's power, but all found they were able to do what others of their species could not. They could raise objects without touching them, manipulate minds, and even see through time and space on occasion. This new power, this newly-named Force, came with only simple requirements: keep peace and settle small disputes. How these two things were done was up to each individual Force-wielder to decide as the situation called.
So began the groups to eventually become the Adepts of the White Current, the Jedi, the Jal Shey, the Sith, and many more. With each new generation, each group grew and they began to clash. They fought over how to handle the affairs of others, what Guardian's initial instructions and intentions were, who held right over property, territory, and various philosophical beliefs. More than anything, they fought over and for power.
Disinclined to step in and break up more petty affairs, Guardian surveyed his Force users and chose one of a thoughtful manner to give extra power. This being was the very first Calenandon (a word taken from an ancient language, meaning "Most Powerful of All"). The power of the Calenandon passed not through bloodlines or personal teaching, but from the Force user with the greatest control of the Force to the next, waiting not for one to die or be born but simply for the right amount of teaching and control to be gained. With the name came a greater control of the Force. One that could previously lift stones and ships with the wave of a hand could suddenly change the rotation of planets. Perhaps most importantly, the Calenandon's ability to manipulate minds was not limited merely to use on the weak-minded, but to all beings, even other Force users.
You don't believe me? Why haven't you heard of or met the Calenandon before, if it's true? Where is Guardian now? Well, I assure you, it is all true and the Calenandon and Guardian both exist in one form or another still, but their tales will wait for another day.
No, no arguing. I promise, I will tell you all, but I've kept you from your duties and lessons too long as it is. Go on, then. Away with you. I have work of my own to be doing, I can't spend all my time sitting here giving you history lessons.
