Make a Star Wars Treetoper!

1. Begin with an inflated balloon, bag (filled with rice, cotton, etc.), styrofoam or plastic ball, or any other round item you wouldn't mind using and/or discarding.

Cover your selected item (I used a bag filled with cotton, for lack of better choices) with strips of paper covered in glue. A simple paste can be made by mixing water and flour together.

Cover your item in paper and glue either in parts or in whole, then let the layer dry. It is very important that each layer be allowed to dry fully before the next layer is added. Cover your round item in 3 layers of paper mache (paper and glue) .

2. Find a smaller, roundish item to cover in paper, for the Death Star's laser area. Because you only need to cover part of your object in paper and glue, a layer of plastic wrap can be laid over an item and covered in the paper mache. Try to make your first layer of paper as smooth as possible, this is the layer that will be visible. Again, you will need to cover this item in 3 layers of paper mache.

Cut a toilet paper tube lengthwise. This will be the cone placed on the top of the tree. Twist the cardboard into a cone shape and glue.

After the paper mache has dried completely, cut a whole in the paper. If anything needs to be removed, do it through this whole. Trim and expand the whole as needed to make space for the laser area indent.

Make a second whole to fit the cardboard cone. Consider the spacing of the two holes before making the second one. Place them too close together and the laser effect will be lost. Place them too far apart and the lasers will point to the ceiling and your indented area will not be visible.

3. Trim the edges of your laser indent piece. Carefully push the indent piece into the whole made for it. A snug fit is best.

Insert the cone through the hole made for it.

Run a line of glue (white/paper glue works fine for this) around the joined edges of the tube and the laser indent. After the glue has dried completely, glue strips of paper along the edges.

After the paper mache has dried, paint your death star.

Finishing: Painted 3 toothpicks for your lasers. Using a toothpick, the point of a paperclip, or a similar object, poke a small whole or indent at three points around your laser area. Dab a little glue on the edge of each toothpick and insert one toothpick into each pre-made hole.

Add a touch of glue to the free tips of each toothpick. Hold the ends together until glue sets and they balance together. Let dry.

Place on tree and enjoy!
