3-19-2008: A Rant About POTW (reposted from the forums)

Is it just me or is the idea of actively soliciting for POTW votes contrary to the original idea behind POTW? Sure G-Man has legitimate reasons to win POTW, but I really don't like the idea of telling user who to vote for at all. None of us POTW winners were able to use these campaigns to win; we all had to rely on the merits of our own profiles and overall character. However what I'm seeing now is essentially a movement telling people to vote for one person for no other reason because he's an underdog. To me this screams of a popularity contest, and I don't think it'd be fair to decide future POTW winners in this way when those users that have outstanding profile pages but don't communicate on the forums as much overshadowed.

Therefore I request that from now on we all refrain from vote solicition campaigns. In this thread, there's really no reason to shout your support for one user for multiple posts after you already voted. Once you vote, you should avoid posting in the thread again until the next round of voting commences. Frankly I'm suprised at the amount of spam I've seen in this thread ever since this campaign for G-Man started, this is yet another reason why I don't like this "rock the vote" movement. I don't need to wade through useless posts just to see who voted for who.

I apologize for this rant, but frankly I don't want to see POTW dissolve into an utterly mindless voting frenzy. It can do better than that; we all know that everyone who strives to win POTW will achieve their goal sooner or later. It's OK by all means to post that you want to win this award, but there's just no need to tell everyone on WOSW to vote for you or someone else. No offence to you G-Man, but I just want to preserve the integrity of POTW as much as possible.

  2. Got your message about rocking the vote. I have to say that I couldn't agree with you more. I think most of The Wild Knights would vote with their own minds anyway but I will make sure they know about this little scam & encourage them to keep voting for their own choices & not the election spam that seems to be pouring into Guest Books. By the way How's it going with those picture thiefs? I did visit the pages where your pics have been wrongly posted & expressed my displeasure at such a low & dishonest practice.

  3. I have to agree with you on the profile of the week 'canvassing' that was going on all last week. I got three messages in my GB asking for me to vote for G-man, and as much as I think he's a lovely guy (my issue is not with him as a person) it's very annoying to see the same message posted over and over again in my guestbook 'telling' me to vote for someone. I have a mind of my own, i'm gonna vote for who I think deserves it, not because they are popular or I happen to talk to them on a regular occasion, but based on their merit and effort they have put into their profile.
I see no harm in friends placing a "vote for *insert name here*" on their own blog, but going around spamming will indeed turn this into a popularity contest, which leaves a lot of people overlooked as you yourself said.
