Been working on a review for a few recent comic books, from the Knights of the Old Republic series, which I'll be posting fairly soon. However, I put that on hold because I got kind of excited as the debut of new The Clone Wars animated TV show drew closer.

Thoughts on The Clone Wars Premiere:

I thoroughly enjoyed the two initial shows, Ambush and Rising Malevolence. As I discussed in my last blog post, I had suspected these type of stories would work much better in half-hour increments on the small screen. And, indeed, I thought the stories in the television version were tighter and less drawn out (and thus more fast-paced) than in the film.

Sure, there were some rather campy aspects of the shows. And some plot holes. But I bought the stories--I was caught up in them--so I was able to overlook plot holes and even enjoy some of the cheesy battle droid humor.

Of the two shows, I enjoyed the one that featured Yoda, Ambush, more (although the other, Rising Malevolence, was very good too). I thought Yoda, as depicted in Ambush, was much more in line with the original trilogy Yoda than the way his character was portrayed in any of the prequel films.

I even enjoyed the modified theme and opening introduction for the show. These aren't the live action movies, and I think the new cartoon introduction serves to emphasize that point. The opening also tapped into the pulp science fiction serials of the thirties and forties, including parodies of war propaganda news reports--both fitting for Star wars, which was influenced by the pulp science fiction tradition of that particular era, among other things of course.

Compare the Clone Wars introduction with both the Cold War propaganda and a science fiction propaganda parody clip below:

In any case, my faith in this series is fully restored, and I'm excited about looking forward to a new episode every week.

Update: 10/9/08: Preview of Episode 3

No, not THAT Episode 3. StarWars.com has posted a short preview for the next installment of The Clone Wars TV show, Shadow of Malevolence. Also below is a sneak peak of the same episode from The Clone Wars Preview Special, along with a new TV spot I found.
