can anybody tell me if there's a trick to getting a banner to work on the profile page?!?

you can find help in the help section under your Yahoo ID at the top of the page. The specs for banners is all explained there...

Yahoo gives images very long addresses, I think that's why banners uploaded to the photos section don't want to work as banners. Try uploading it to an image hosting site like www.photobucket.com .
