Lightsaber Designs
I- Protosabers
Archaic lightsabers, also known as protosabers were the first known kind of lightsaber. Much like later lightsabers, their focusing crystal was set inside a hilt from which a blade of energy was emitted. The main difference between these lightsabers and later lightsabers lay in that the hilt was connected by a cable to an external power supply carried by the wielder on his or her back.
The invention of smaller power cells that could be fit within the hilt of the lightsaber and the greater freedom of movement gained by this advance in lightsaber technology made protosabers obsolete.
II- Curved-hilt Lightsaber
The curved-hilt lightsaber was a standard lightsaber design that was often seen during the prime of Form II lightsaber combat, both among the Jedi and Sith Orders. The use of curved hilts allowed for more precise movements as well as near-perfect flexibility when engaged in lightsaber-to-lightsaber combat. It was also more complex and gave the creator of such a hilt more of a challenge in aligning its crystals, requiring a minor variation in holding the grip. Curved hilts needed to be held more in the palm, farther away from the fingertips. The hilt's curvature also gave the wielder more power when delivering overhand strikes and would change the angle of the attacks by the merest fraction of a degree; this was usually just enough to confuse and disorient an unsuspecting opponent, as evident when Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi quickly lost to Count Dooku in their duel on Geonosis.
Some techniques were more difficult when using a curved hilt, but many others became far more effective. This hilt design was not limited to Form II; its advantages in dueling carried over to every form including Form V, as in the case of Darth Bane. Unfortunately, one major side effect of wielding a curved-hilt lightsaber was that they were more difficult to use in blaster-bolt deflection. This, coupled with Form II's weakness in this area, made a Makashi user wielding a curved hilt particularly vulnerable to blasterfire.
The degree of the curve at the top of the hilt in relation to the hand holds is the important factor. The curve at the bottom of the hilt (if present) only effects electronics and power core placement. The bottom curvature on many lightsabers is mostly ornamental.
III- Double Lightsaber
The double-bladed lightsaber, also known as the Sith lightsaber or saberstaff, was a specialized form of lightsaber. Utilizing the same technology as a standard lightsaber, the double-bladed Lightsaber was designed with two blades attached to each other. This made it twice as powerful with "more kills per swing" as some put it. The user could activate each blade independently of the other.
Exar Kun is often credited with creating the first double-bladed lightsaber. However, according to the Tedryn Holocron, Kun assembled his lightsaber following instructions from a Sith Holocron possibly prepared by the Exiles. The design was likely influenced by the Zabrak quarterstaff, or zhaboka.
During the Jedi Civil War, the double-bladed lightsaber was a popular weapon for the Sith followers of Darth Revan and Darth Malak. Even the Jedi Knights, and some Jedi Masters, used the weapon during those dark times, but the Jedi Council traditionally frowned on use of the blade, believing a traditional lightsaber was enough, and considering the double-bladed lightsaber little more than a weapon designed to kill more effectively, while the Jedi developed the lightsaber to defend. Whatever the case, it was more popular among Sith than among Jedi, to the point that it was also known as a Sith lightsaber.
In 990 BBY, ten years after the Seventh Battle of Ruusan, the Jedi Knight Sarro Xaj used a blue double-bladed lightsaber in combat against Darth Zannah on Tython. During the duel, Zannah was easily overpowered by Xaj in one-on-one combat, however, when Master Worror lost his concentration and his battle meditation was broken, Xaj became distracted, allowing Zannah to stab him through his chest, after using her Sith sorcery to create an illusion of his worst nightmares before him, further distracting him. During the waning days of the Galactic Republic, Jastus Farr was the only known Jedi to wield a double-bladed lightsaber. Darth Maul was a Sith Lord who wielded a double-bladed lightsaber, which he used to kill Qui-Gon Jinn in the Battle of Naboo.
Following the fall of the Galactic Empire and the formation of the New Jedi Order, some of the members began to use the lethal weapon once more, such as Jedi Knight Jaden Korr.
In 137 ABY, one practitioner of this lightsaber was the Twi'lek Jedi Knight Shado Vao. It was similar to Exar Kun's lightsaber in that he could activate both ends simultaneously or he could activate one, thus having it function like a regular lightsaber. Many Sith in Darth Krayt's order also used double-bladed lightsabers, such as the Sith Lord Darth Azard. His was unique since he had a curved hilt, much like Asajj Ventress' lightsaber.
The double-bladed lightsaber was intended to look menacing, and its two blades did indeed give it a very deadly countenance. However, unskilled users were likely to cut themselves in half with a double-bladed lightsaber should they attempt to use it without properly training themselves.
Most Jedi, Sith, Dark Jedi, and Sith Lords favored the single bladed lightsaber due to this reason, or least still tried to use the idea by using two single-hilt sabers. Another drawback was that the attack and parrying of the double-bladed lightsaber was limited by the fact that unlike a normal lightsaber, one could not simply readjust their posture as the saberstaff required them to hold it either horizontally or diagonally while fighting. One last disadvantage of the double-bladed lightsaber was size of the hilt itself. Modified to emit two blades, it was more than twice as long as the standard lightsaber, and is almost inevitably a target when dueling another lightsaber-wielding foe. Even skilled users have been subject to this weakness.
To most effectively wield a double-bladed lightsaber, the staff must be kept moving around the body, never holding still and presenting an easy target, nor a predictable strike. Many users believed that the blades must be under control at all times. That means manipulation of the length or intensity of each blade, either through telekinetic means or physical, both of which are extremely hard to focus on while in combat. Exar Kun is believed to have mastered such a technique.
A fiber-cord linked lightsaber was another form of double-bladed lightsaber where the hilts were joined by a fiber cord. More difficult to control than a double-bladed saber, the fiber cord joint of the weapon gave the wielder the benefit of striking from unexpected angles. In addition, the hilt could be easily split into two to use the two blades separately and then be merged once again. Asajj Ventress's lightsabers were modified to accommodate a fiber cord link on occasion.
IV- Forked Lightsaber
The forked lightsaber was a type of lightsaber seen very rarely. So far, the only Jedi known to use such a weapon was Roblio Darté, whose lightsaber had two blue blades. The forked lightsaber was essentially a regular lightsaber with a second blade emitter protruding near the first one at a 45 degree angle to the axis of the hilt. The hilt itself was also slightly curved, though not as much as with the sabers of Darth Tyr!@#$ and Asajj Ventress.
V- Lightclub
The lightclub was a weapon similar to a lightsaber. However, special focusing crystals and power systems enabled this rare lightsaber to project a blade up to three meters in length. These large lightsabers were generally used only by beings of immense stature. Gorc, a mutated Gamorrean Dark Jedi, used such a weapon.
VI- Lightfoil
Lightfoils were small and elegant energy swords based upon lightsaber design. Originally designed by the Sith of the Mecrosa Order, their quality was on par with that of Jedi lightsabers. They were best suited for use with one-hand in the Form II: Makashi style. After the Cleansing of the Nine Houses, with the Sith gone, the lightfoil begins to be made and used by non-Force sensitives, becomming popular among certain nobles of the Tapani Sector, especially those that called themselves "saber rakes". Post-Cleansing Lightfoils were weaker than authentic lightsabers due to the poor quality focusing crystals used in their manufacture and the relatively low level of craftsmanship compared to Jedi artisans. On the plus side, though, the knockoff lightfoils apparently did not require any connection to the Force to create, and were fully usable by non-Force sensitives.
VII- Lightwhip
A lightwhip, also known as an energy whip or a laser whip, was a rare variation of the lightsaber. Like the lightsaber, it emitted a coherent beam of energy. However, the blade was long and flexible and had the properties of a whip. In some ways, they were less efficient than lightsabers.
Known users of the lightwhip included Kit Fisto, Jax Pavan, Vianna D'Pow, Lumiya, Githany, Silri, Ona Nobis, and possibly the Black Sun Vigo Lord Xist. Like lightsabers, lightwhips came in a variety of colors, including: red, orange, pink, yellow, and green.
One was built by Obi-Wan Kenobi, who designed it from a whip he had seen used by the bounty hunter Ona Nobis. The same weapon was used by the Nautolan Jedi Kit Fisto, along with Obi-Wan, during their mission on Ord Cestus.
Another one was found by Major Nick Rostu aboard the smuggler ship Far Ranger, and was used by Jax Pavan in a duel against Prince Xizor. Lumiya's lightwhip, which was built from a shard of the Kaiburr crystal and Mandalorian iron, was specially modified to include both energy and matter, making it impossible for Luke Skywalker to overcome with just a single lightsaber blade. In their rematch, Luke used a shoto in conjunction with his lightsaber to counter it. Years later, during their final duel on Terephon, Luke was confident enough in his abilities that he fought with his normal lightsaber alone. He defeated and killed Lumiya.
VIII- Paired Lightsabers
Paired lightsabers were dual lightsabers that could be joined together into a double-bladed saber. One of the earliest users of paired lightsabers was the Sith Blademaster Kas'im, who used the paired function to disguise his two lightsabers as a single double-bladed weapon, before splitting it into two separate weapons. He used this tactic to great effect against Darth Bane on Lehon.
Komari Vosa was known to have used paired lightsabers. This usage passed on to Asajj Ventress when she received Vosa's weapons after the former's death. Ventress' skill with the weapons was impressive, but not enough to defeat seasoned Jedi such as Mace Windu or Obi-Wan Kenobi.
One of the more recent users of paired lightsabers is the Emperor's Hand; Sa Cuis. However, it appeared that Cuis only used the paired function for easy storage, wielding his lightsabers separately in combat.
IX- Saberpike
Lightsaber pikes (or saberpike) were weapons used by the Emperor's Shadow Guard, and possibly Kazdan Paratus. They were quarterstaffs that could be ignited to use a lightsaber blade, that was shorter and thicker than a normal one, from one end. Including the blade, the weapon was almost as long as the body, could keep enemies at a distance, and gave the wielder the advantage of a longer reach. The staff portion of the weapon was constructed from phrik allowing it to resist lightsabers.
X- Shoto
The shoto (sometimes simply called short lightsaber) was a lightsaber with a shorter hilt that produced a drastically shorter blade than its more common counterparts. Relatively rare in comparison to ordinary lightsaber types, shotos were sometimes used in the off-hand of a Jedi or Sith duelist.
Essentially the purpose of a shoto in lightsaber combat was to counter attacks by an opponent's weapon while freeing the primary lightsaber for a return strike. To this end, shoto wielders were required to become proficient in the lightsaber techniques of Niman or Jar'Kai in order to reduce risk of injury to themselves due to the increased dexterity needed to master the use of both blades simultaneously. Masters of this technique could deliver a high number of attacks in a very short time, potentially overpowering opponents quickly rather than engaging in a protracted duel. Shotos were also used to counter lightwhips.
Other than blade and hilt length, the shoto was little different from a normal lightsaber; it utilized the same types and number of crystals, could be upgraded with different parts, and took the same Force-sensitivity to construct.
The first shotos, referred to as short lightsabers, were introduced during the Old Sith Wars; one of the most notable users of this secondary blade was the ancient Jedi Master Kavar, who used a matched lightsaber and shoto with blue beams. Uthar Wynn's Sith apprentice and deputy at the Sith Academy on Korriban, Yuthura Ban, wielded a red-bladed shoto as her primary weapon.
The Sith Lord Freedon Nadd's lightsaber was a bronze-bladed shoto, which was later taken from his tomb on Dxun by a strike team sent by the Jedi Exile. During the Clone Wars era, the rebellious Jedi Master Sora Bulq carried a shoto which he used in a duel against the Jedi Master, Mace Windu. The Grand Master of the New Jedi Order, Luke Skywalker, later constructed and used one to counter the unusual nature of Lumiya's lightwhip
.
The Dark Jedi Pic's and the Jedi Grand Master Yoda's lightsabers were small enough that they may actually have been technically classifiable as a shoto, though they were not used as such. During the Swarm War, the Dark Jedi Lomi Plo also used a shoto in her duel against Jacen Solo and Luke Skywalker.
During the events of the Second Galactic Civil War, when Luke Skywalker became aware of the re-emergence of Lumiya, he had his wife also construct a shoto. As the weapons were considered an essential item to have when fighting a lightwhip because it countered the advantage that the lightwhip had, the ability to go in more than one direction. Mara Jade constructed a shoto with a blue blade, while Luke's shoto had a red blade.
XI- Saberstaff
The lightsaber staff was a variation on the traditional Jedi weapon, with the blade being emitted from one end of a rod or staff, increasing the reach of the weapon to produce a spear-like effect. Another advantage was surprise, as the staff's appearance was rather commonplace until the lightsaber was lit.
One of the Bpfasshi Dark Jedi defeated by Jedi Master Yoda during the Clone Wars used a lightsaber staff of made of an as-yet unknown material. The Sith Lord Darth Nihl's lightsaber was long and staff-like in appearance. The handle seemed not to be made of metal, but almost of coral or wood. On the opposite end to the blade emitter was a ring big enough to fit Nihl's hand. Nihl used this lightsaber with deadly effectiveness, taking the right arm of Wolf Sazen and dueling Kol Skywalker.
It was also used by Jedi Master Zao. His lightsaber consisted of a long wooden cane which the blind Jedi Master used to help him get around, though this variation was called a lightsaber cane.
XII- Training Saber
Training lightsabers, also known as practice sabers, were low-powered lightsabers used by Jedi Initiates and younglings. Using the training weapons, younglings learned the basics of wielding a lightsaber. Like a regular lightsaber set to low power, they could not sever limbs or pierce flesh. Skin contact was painful, producing burns which could cause serious welts and bruises.
In the Jedi Praxeum, during the New Jedi Order, these sabers were given to grown Padawans and training droids. Rosh Penin received a yellow training lightsaber during his early training.
A Sith Training Saber was a practice weapon used by students at the Sith academy on Korriban around the time of the New Sith Wars. The training saber had a durasteel blade with blunt edges, and was balanced to mimic real lightsabers. The blade of a training saber was covered with millions of microscopic toxin-filled barbs taken from pelko bugs that would cause burns to the skin on contact and temporarily paralyze the surrounding area to mimic the effect of losing a limb.
