Prologue

KAMINO

The apartment had white and black flooring, and white walls. There was a sofa facing the door.
And a window behind it. Damon and Catherine sat looking out the window. Damon sighed. "So," he
said. "We're officially teenagers."
Catherine didn't hear him. She was watching the rain fall. She loved Kamino because she loved
it when it rained. Sometimes she would stare at it for hours.
Damon turned to face her. His black hair was a mess, as he had just recently gotten up.
"Cat?" he asked. "Are you alright?" She still didn't hear him she was still in her own world. Her
blue eyes looked distent, like she was staring at something far away.
"Cat," Damon said, louder this time. She jumped and quikly turned to face him. Her brown hair
whisped through the air.
"Are you alright?" Damon repeated.
She stared at him for a while, as if she didn't quite understand he had just said. "Oh," she said.
"Yes, I'm fine. Why?"
"I asked you a question and you didn't answer, so I was wandering if you were OK."
"Oh. You asked me a question?"
"Yes," Damon sighed.
"Oh. Sorry. I didn't here you."
She turned back to look at the rain again. The twins sat there in silence for a while. Damon
turned to look at the rain. I wandered why his sister liked it so much. He found it hard to be-
lieve that something so insignificant could be so interesting to someone. But then he got it.
There was a saying that Damon had heard. "One man's worthless is another man's priceless."
He thought that maybe the reason he didn't understand why she liked it so much was because,
in a way, he thought it was worthless. But, maybe, to her, it was priceless.
"I have a question," he said.
"Is it the same one you were trying to ask me but I didn't here it?" Cat asked.
"No," Damon replied. "It's about someting else."
"Alright. Fire away."
"Why do you like the rain so much?"
"Well, there are many reasons, but the biggest reason why I like it is because it's beautiful, and
when I watch it it takes my mind off of everything. Clears my head. Helps me think."
"I doesn't clear my head, it just gets it wet."
"Is that a joke, or are you serious?" Cat asked.
"Neither."
"How can it be neither?"
"Simple," Damon smiled and continued, "I was joking about it being neither."
"OK..."
Right then their parents walked in. Their mother, Heilan, seemed rather happy.
"We're done," she said.
"Done with what?" asked Cat.
"We're done with the research," said their father, Korlo. "So now we can move back to
Coruscant."
The twins looked at each other. They knew that someday they would have to move back there,
but they had hoped they wouldn't have to move so soon.
