Collection History Ep. III

Last time we posted we talked about breaking rules 1 and 2 of the rules we made up at the start of our collecting, in case you missed the rules they are:

1. We would never buy anything that we could not open.
2. We would never open any "special" toys that we did not have two of.
3. Fifty dollars was our limit for any one item except on Legos.
4. We would not cheat on Star Wars with "other toys".

Well, rule number 3 was easy to keep at first becuase we were just collecting figures. Spending six bucks on each figure was no big deal, even though we would sometimes buy 8 or more at a time. Then we met the Banthas! Love at first sight! Once we got one, we had to get a herd. Then the collection grew by leaps and bounds. Our local comic book shop had bought somebody's collection and was selling everything at 3-6 bucks each, we bought 90% of the collection over a two day period. Most was in so-so shape, but there was a lot in mint or near mint. While we try to stay in the fifty dollar range sometimes it's hard to say "no."

Next time rule 4...

  1. In the early days I didn't open anything. I packed it all away in a walk in closet because I feared it would loose value. Then one day as I peered through the plastic at the caged figures inside, and thought to myself, am I in this for the money or the fun of it? I ripped everything open that night and displayed it all on a shelf. It was like Christmas, man! From then on I decided I love collecting because of the art and the way things look after displayed. Forget the money!!! I also decided I could never afford everything in every line. So now I only buy my favorite figures. I try to never buy ones that don't look good either. Like ugly Leia's and things like that. They will always make more and they keep getting better.

I can sympathize. It's very hard to be a collector and stay within the confines of a meager budget! :)
