Collection History Ep. IV

Last time we posted we talked about breaking rule 3 of the rules we made up at the start of our collecting, in case you missed the rules they are:

1. We would never buy anything that we could not open.
2. We would never open any "special" toys that we did not have two of.
3. Fifty dollars was our limit for any one item except on Legos.
4. We would not cheat on Star Wars with "other toys".

Now on to Rule 4...
Never cheat on Star Wars... This was easy for the first six or eight months or so. After all, we were chasing the mighty toys of Star Wars, so many new things to wrap our hands around. The 30th Anniv. Collection, getting all those darn coins.

Then it happen, we had all the coins that were out. Crap now what? Nothing new was coming our way. Well, on a trip to Ft. Lauderdale we found Tate's Comics. The store was freaking awesome. We dropped some serious money there on Star Wars stuff. On the way to the counter, with our arms overflowing, Cate stops to check out some of the Kidrobot and CIboy toys. Little plastic import comic style toys. She got a couple. Price ranges on some were far more then some Star Wars stuff. Me, I just thought that buying them meant less money on Star Wars. I wasn't all that happy about the idea.

Then we started checking the "other" toy isles at the stores, next came G.I. Joes, Marvel figures, Batman stuff, Hot Wheels (the cool mystery packs), Spawn and anything else that we liked. With the above things we mostly stick to close out priced items, the toys the kids reject, we feel kind of bad for them...

When we got married in January in Miami, we went back to Tate's and ended up spending more on CIboys, Kidrobot, Bearbricks and other various import toys then we did on Star Wars. Good news is it was because we had nearly everything Star Wars that was for sale there.

We highly recommend Tate's if you're ever in the Ft. Lauderdale area. And normally we're anti-comicbook shop but his prices are very fair and he's pretty cool guy.

  2. That's funny, I started totally backwards from you. My wife and I (before we were married) started buying everything we could get our hands on, i.e. comics, Marvel figures, DC Direct, McFarlane, Star Wars, etc. etc.

Since then I've gravitated more towards Star Wars and away from the rest. She doesn't buy any figures for herself anymore, just other types of collectibles. We'll still splurge if we find good sales, like buy 5 DC figures for the price of 3 at our comic shop. And on free comic book day we go nuts if there is a good artist there signing stuff. Oh yeah, that's coming up!
